Dijkstra, 1972: "If you want more effective programmers you will discover that they should not waste their time debugging, they should not introduce bugs to start with"
If you want to understand the recursion debate, go to the repository below, learn a bit of PDP8 programming, and then imagine implementing recursion in that machine. github.com/unclebob/PDP8E…
"recognize that [new machines are] faster and that, hence, time does not matter so much any more [and] it becomes more realistic to invest some of the machine's speed in other things than sheer production, such as programming comfort, elegance, and reliability." Dijkstra, 1962
In the late 50s a major issue was whether or not languages should permit recursion. Dijkstra was adamantly in favor. Many others laughed at him implying he was “playing” not programming.
Unix began as a scheduling algorithm for a finicky disk drive on a PDP-7. The author, Ken Thompson, wrote it after writing a nice space-travel game on that same PDP-7.

Structured Programming is discipline imposed upon direct transfer of control.
Object Oriented Programming is discipline imposed upon indirect transfer of control.
Functional Programming is discipline imposed upon assignment.
Discipline is a good thing.
I’m a big fan of Functional Programming; I think it’s great.
I’m a big fan of Object Oriented Programming; I think it’s great.
I’m a big fan of Procedural Programming; I think it’s great.
I’m a really big fan of using all three together at the same time. I think that should…
Every decade there are innovations that promise to spell the end of all programmers. First it was compilers. Then it was COBOL. Then it was OO. Then it was logic programming. Then it was fuzzy logic and backchaining AI, Then it was MDA. Now it’s LLM’s.
Eisenhower Matrix:
I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.
For a software:
- Architecture is important
- Functionality is Urgent
My IDE journey:-
Turbo C++ Editor -> FoxPro Editor -> Visual C++ -> Vim -> Eclipse -> Visual Studio -> Rider -> Android Studio -> VSCode -> Intellij Idea.
It was Grace Hopper who coined the term “compiler”. But why that word?
It was because her initial vision was for a symbolic language that piled relocatable subroutines one upon the other, “compiling” them into a program.
