In the late 50s a major issue was whether or not languages should permit recursion. Dijkstra was adamantly in favor. Many others laughed at him implying he was “playing” not programming.

It was Grace Hopper who coined the term “compiler”. But why that word? It was because her initial vision was for a symbolic language that piled relocatable subroutines one upon the other, “compiling” them into a program.
