I spoke to some of the delegates and attendees, one who came from as far away as Bowmanville, who felt deeply disrespected by the Mayor’s last minute surprise motion to refer yesterday’s decision to the March 20 General Issues Committee meeting. 🧵 #HamOnt thespec.com/news/council/p…
For some of the delegates, it means taking another day off from work, and coming back to say it all over again on March 20. The reason an LRT Sub-Committee exists is to provide a forum to address LRT issues, listen to delegates, and then make decisions.
It didn’t have to be like this. There were other easy ways to delay the vote to avoid a decision during budget time (the reason stated). The simplest = ask the Chair (Nann) and Vice Chair (me) to move the meeting to a future date. I had no idea this was going to happen.
Last minute surprise motions for conflicts that were known months in advance ≠ good governance. It’s a bizarre outcome, since GIC is already the literal committee that the LRT Sub-Committee reports to anyway. We didn’t need to delay voting on this yesterday.
