Despite what many of us are taught, grief isn’t a linear process. Grief is a whirlwind, a rainbow of feelings that bleed into one another, a shape-shifting kaleidoscope of emotion. One moment could be fine, the next a wave that assaults our calm. GRIEF DEMANDS WE SURF.
You're more than a kid who got bullied. You're more than a spouse who got abused. You're more than an adult who got brainwashed. You're more than a survivor who struggles w/ trauma responses. In recovery we remember-- or create-- who we REALLY are. Sometimes from scratch.

A confusing thing about trauma recovery is that our symptoms & triggers may not seem to have anything to do w/ what we went through. Trauma responses often cosplay as symptoms unrelated to trauma-- but we get better at recognizing 'em as we get more experience w/ recovery.
Addiction is VERY misunderstood & stigmatized in our culture. In speaking out about his addiction, Matthew Perry was making a decision that surely harmed his professional career-- but he was sticking up for me and everybody else who wrestles w/ this mother*cking BEAST every day.
There will be plenty of people who effortfully try to blame & shame you for decisions you made when your perception & judgment were compromised by coercion, dissociation, & traumatic stress. It's real important YOU not be one of those people.
If you are battling the BEAST of addiction, please know that you are SO LOVED.
How wonderful it is that no one needs to wait a moment before starting to improve the world.
The world will give way to those with purpose and vision.

Many children that we label as resilient are actually trying their best to survive a situation that they did not ask to be in. Trauma doesn't always show up as acting out or aggression it can also present as very well-behaved, perfectionism and people-pleasing.
I’ve heard of people who end up having nightmares where they go out in public and forget to wear their mask. We are living through a traumatic event. Many are constantly traumatized, trying to live through this on their own. Please be easy on yourself. This is a scary time.

You were not "foolish" or "stupid" or "weak" for acquiescing to the expectations & preferences of those who had physical, social, economic, or spiritual power over you. You were not on an even playing field. It's unfair to pretend you were. This is how coercive control works.
People who've never met you will speak w/ great moral certainty about your motivations & choices-- without ANY understanding of what dissociation had done to your thinking or judgment at the time. Don't let 'em get in your head. That all has NOTHING meaningful to do w/ you.

This week I was sick. The old me would have kept on pushing through. Instead I took time to do nothing. Nothing used to make me feel guilty. Production was how I proved my worthiness. I am worthy of rest and time for restoration. Healing involves mindset shifts.

I hate how discussions around homelessness often frame the issue as "residents" vs the unhoused, as if folks experiencing homelessness aren't still residents of the community. Being unhoused does not strip you of your humanity.
