“Once people saw the images from Gaza—parents carrying their children’s remains in plastic bags, day after day of tiny bodies torn apart—they couldn’t unsee them. There was only before and after the Gaza Genocide.” It’s publication day. I hope it contributes to this vital canon.

This is Minister Ben-Gvir’s most recent incitement to commit genocide under Article III(c) of the 1948 Genocide Convention. The Lemkin Institute strongly condemns the recent inhumane statements of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, in which he called for the deliberate killing of “30 to 40” Palestinians every night in Gaza, even if they pose no immediate danger, because, according to him, “[t]here are people there who are not worthy of life. They shouldn’t live. They’re not even people.” We will be very clear: This statement, which has garnered some outrage in Europe, is an unambiguous declaration of genocidal intent and incitement to genocide. Minister Ben Gvir’s statements, made on a podcast, demonstrate the consequences Israel’s ongoing global impunity: Israeli leaders now feel such unaccountability that they can clearly invoke language closely associated with Nazism – under which the term “Lebensunwertes Leben” (“life unworthy of life”) was used to justify the killing of millions of people – without fear of consequences. They shouldn’t live. They’re not even people.” We will be very clear: This statement, which has garnered some outrage in Europe, is an unambiguous declaration of genocidal intent and incitement to genocide. Although Ben-Gvir’s provocative language ruffles some feathers in Israel, largely because he so plainly and crudely states to the world what is driving that nation in its war against the Palestinian people, he is nothing but the ugly, self-congratulatory face of a genocidal state and society. Minister Ben-Gvir must be held legally responsible for his violations of the Genocide Convention. But that is not enough. As humanity has been saying for years now, mere condemnations of Israel and its leaders will not work. Symbolic sanctions will not work. Denouncing the inhumane is not enough when one has allowed the inhumane to become the reality for an entire group of people. The international community has failed miserably to prevent this genocide or even stem its determined advance. But we can still stop the killing and mitigate the horrors. We can still save mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, brothers and sisters. As Dag Hammarskjöld, second Secretary-General of the United Nations reminded us: “The United Nations was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell.” This hell needs to come to an end. From the students of Harvard, to the youth of Dahieh, to the sons of Nabatieh, and the people of Tyre.” Harvard Medical School graduate Leen Ezzeddine, from the southern Lebanese town of Arabsalim, used her graduation speech to remind her peers of the students in Gaza and southern Lebanon who do not benefit from the same “arbitrary luck and circumstance” that she and her classmates have enjoyed. Ezzeddine said her presence at that podium was “evidence of what survives the border, the bomb, and the exile,” and of “what becomes possible when people the world has tried to erase are allowed to live.”

This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day.
