I also tend to associate these as being our greatest influencers with the sun representing our essence. The moon is our impulsive feelings and mercury represents our ego or the voice in our head.

Both planets also have ties to the 3rd house! Mercury being the ruler of Gemini which is related in modern astrology to the 3rd house and in traditional astrology the moon has its joy in the 3rd house!
