$GLD — the base broke on real volume. The tape says accumulate, the option book says hedge. CPI settles it.
Spot $403.26 pre-bell, flat against Monday's 402.54 close. Gold ETF is +8.3% in five sessions and just closed back above the June 17 pivot at 402.04 for the first time since that swing.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED
Aug 5 broke the six-week July base (363.32–383.60) on 14.76M shares against a 7.30M 30-day average — a 2x volume expansion, not a drift.
THE PART RETAIL CHARTS DON'T SHOW
Off-exchange blocks printed straight through the break: 701k shares at 374.71 on Aug 4 (before the move), 635k and 360k at 389.67 on Aug 6, 324k at 396.71 on Aug 10. Roughly $779M of dark-pool size positioned into and through the breakout.
The option book disagrees. Yesterday: 837k calls vs 317k puts (P/C 0.38) — but net call premium was NEGATIVE $34.0M, bearish premium ($324M) beat bullish ($261M), and cumulative directional delta sat at -2.1M. More calls hit the bid than the ask. That is calls being SOLD into strength, not bought. Blocks accumulating while premium is written overhead is a hedged advance, not a chase.
CATALYST
July CPI Wednesday Aug 12; PPI and jobless claims Thursday Aug 13. 30-day IV rank is 39.6, and the 7-day implied move is ±$12.70 (±2.7%). That band reaches both the retest and the trigger — which is exactly why this is a levels post and not a direction post.
LEVELS
Retest zone 389.64–392.12 — the Aug 5 close and Aug 6 high, the shelf the break was made from.
Invalidation: daily close under 383.60. That is the July base ceiling; back inside it, the breakout failed and nothing above matters.
Trigger: daily close over 411.82 — the 200-day, which price has not closed above since June 4.
Upside references 418.42 and 421.82 (the May 21 and May 29 pivot highs).
THE HONEST R:R
Chasing here is bad math. From spot to the 383.60 invalidation is ~19 points of risk against ~16 to the first reference — under 1R. The same idea from a 391 retest risks ~7 to make ~27, better than 3R.
So: no size into the print. The retest is the trade, and the 200-day close is the confirmation. If neither shows up, there is nothing here to do.

MLB card results - Monday Aug 10
2-0. Equal-unit ROI +130.7%, held to resolution, at the prices we actually paid.
WON
- Mets @ .45 - beat ATL 8-5
- Blue Jays @ .42 - beat BOS 2-1
A two-game card, and the ROI is double the record for the same reason it usually is: both sides were priced as dogs. At 45c and 42c you are getting roughly 2.3-to-1 on your money, so a clean sweep pays like a 4-0 night on chalk would not. Two picks is also a small sample - one loss here and the same card reads -100% on that leg.
Every line reconciled against the MLB final scores, not against our own win flags.

MLB card - Tuesday Aug 11, 15 games
HITS + RUNS + RBI
- Freddie Freeman vs Michael Wacha, Dodger Stadium. Matchup play: .533 in 15 career at-bats off Wacha, who allows 8.62 hits/9.
- Bo Bichette vs Martin Perez, Truist Park. Matchup play: .467 in 15 career at-bats, Perez at 9.48 hits/9.
- Brandon Nimmo vs Ryan Johnson, Angel Stadium. Form play: hot streak, 14 hits and 8 RBI in his last 10, and Johnson is giving up 11.02 hits/9.
HOME RUNS
- Junior Caminero vs Mason Barnett. Form play: 2 HR in his last 5, 5 in his last 10, against a 1.76 HR/9 and a 6.07 ERA. Same-hand look is the one knock.
- Joc Pederson vs Ryan Johnson. Matchup play: Johnson sits at 2.35 HR/9 with a 7.16 ERA, and this is the opposite-hand side of it.
- Pete Alonso vs Bailey Ober. Form play: 2 HR in his last 5, plus a homer in 4 career at-bats off Ober. Target Field at 0.95x is working against him.
- Jake Burger vs Ryan Johnson. Pure matchup play - 0 HR in his last 10, so this is the 2.35 HR/9 arm doing the work, not the bat.
- Mike Trout vs Cody Bradford. Form play: 2 HR in his last 5 with the opposite-hand edge.
STRIKEOUTS
- Dylan Cease. Career 11.15 K/9, last five starts 11-7-12-7-10, most recent a 10.
- Passing on Paul Skenes despite the 10.95 career mark. His last five are 7-8-11-7-6. A falling trend disqualifies the bigger name.
- Blake Snell's 11.20 career K/9 is the best number on the board and is unusable: one logged start since May, so there is no last-five to read.

SCORECARD — this morning's $GLD chart post, judged on the close.
Verdict: RESPECTED. Closed 400.96, inside the published range. Not a win, not a loss — a nothing day, and we post those too.
What we staked at 8:11am, unchanged and not refitted:
- trigger 411.82 (the 200-day)
- invalidation 383.60
- reaction zone 389.64-392.12
The session: opened 403.44, high 404.01, low 399.89, close 400.96. Down 1.58 on the day. Neither level was closed through. Neither was even wicked — the high stayed 7.81 under the trigger, the low 16.29 above the invalidation, and the reaction zone was never reached.
Why it resolved boring: nothing was scheduled to resolve it. July CPI prints tomorrow, PPI and claims Thursday. A 1.58 close-to-close move against a 7-day implied move of 12.7 is the tape declining to guess ahead of the number. That is compression, not conviction, and it is exactly what an unresolved catalyst window looks like.
Structure is unchanged, so the levels carry into tomorrow as published. The 200-day still caps it; 383.60 still defines the failure case. CPI decides which one gets tested.
We score every open call, including the dull ones. A track record with only the interesting days in it is not a track record.

$BTC has closed inside the same 3,175-point range for 21 straight sessions. That is the tightest 14-day range in a year — and CPI prints before the bell.
Spot $64,168 as I write this, +0.97% against Tuesday's 63,551 close.
THE COIL IS REAL, NOT A VIBE
The 14-day high-low range is 4.95% of price. Against the past year that sits at the 0th percentile — there has been no tighter two-week range in twelve months. The 30-day range (7.33%) is also at its yearly floor. Average absolute daily move has collapsed to 0.63% over ten sessions against 1.32% over the past 120. Volume confirms the drift: $18.3B/day over five sessions vs $22.6B over thirty.
Compression is not direction. It is stored energy plus a scheduled trigger.
THE PART RETAIL CHARTS DON'T SHOW
Two order-flow readings disagree, and the disagreement is the setup.
Perp funding is positive across the major venues — Binance +0.0081% per 8h, Bybit +0.0059%, OKX +0.0045% — against $47.2B of aggregate open interest. Offshore leverage is paying to stay long.
The Coinbase premium has been negative for all fourteen sessions, in a -0.05% to -0.14% band, latest -0.107%. US spot is not bidding it. Fear & Greed reads 26.
So: leveraged longs financing a position that US spot demand is not funding, into a macro print, at the tightest range of the year. Whichever side is wrong gets liquidated first. That is where the move comes from.
CATALYST
July CPI, today 8:30am ET. Consensus 3.4% headline YoY (3.5% prior) and 2.5% core (2.6% prior), +0.2% MoM. PPI and jobless claims follow Thursday.
LEVELS
Reaction zone 63,185–63,352 — the Aug 11 low and the 50-day, the shelf this range has been building from.
Invalidation: daily close under 62,227. That is the Aug 3 pivot low and the floor of all 21 closes. Below it the coil resolved down and nothing above matters.
Trigger: daily close over 65,402 — the Aug 9 pivot high, ceiling of the same 21 closes.
Upside references 66,910 (the July 21 pivot) then 69,748, the 200-day, which has not been closed above since June.
THE HONEST R:R
Mid-range is the worst seat in the house. From here it is roughly 1,900 of risk to invalidation for about 1,250 to the trigger — under 1R for the privilege of guessing a CPI print.
The retest pays better: from 63,270 you risk ~1,040 for ~2,130 into the ceiling, north of 2R. And a breakout is only worth taking if the stop sits under 63,185 rather than all the way back at the floor — otherwise it is 3,175 of risk for 1,508 to the first reference.
No size into the print. The levels are the trade; the print picks the direction.
