@thatstageinlife @MerriamWebster Ugh sorry I messed up that example. The south shore of an east-flowing river would of course be the right bank.

@thatstageinlife @MerriamWebster No. Sides of a river are described as "left" and "right" relative to the direction of flow (e.g. the south bank of an east-flowing river is the left bank). This is a universal convention and makes more sense than cardinal directions because rivers don't go in straight lines.

@UnicornSuccess @thatstageinlife @MerriamWebster It's not a local thing, sides of a river are always "left" and "right" based on facing downstream.

@nvolpewild (and to add to that, since I didn't think to look it up right away: 3238 people have ever used eBird in Egypt, submitting 26,042 checklists, while in Belgium 7212 people have submitted 83,992 checklists -- that's over 3 times the eBird activity.)

@nvolpewild I find it hard to believe Egypt has lower bird diversity than Belgium. This is probably a product of lower eBird uptake in Egypt (and low ecotourism), therefore not a lot of people listing all the Afro-European migrants moving up and down the Nile

@nvolpewild @adamonariver Yes but birders are not evenly distributed around the globe, they have geographic patters just like birds and soccer players. And eBird doesn't even have an Arabic option in its language settings.

@J_P_Wilson @nvolpewild (But to answer your question: the figures above use the eBird all-time country lists, which are 710 for Canada and 291 for B&H. Size probably does matter when latitudes are similar - also Canada probably has much higher eBird uptake)

@J_P_Wilson @nvolpewild I suspect it's amore about (low) latitude than land mass. Tropical countries have more bird diversity and play more soccer.

@anne_theriault @christinaemoss Birthright citizenship is largely an Americas thing. It comes from English common law but isn’t even maintained by the current law in the UK en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_soli

@terraloire back in my day pizza was ordered by phone, so you couldn’t confirm the order until you’d heard yourself say the toppings out loud

@Sean_YYZ What makes them so? What is the technical difference between RMs and counties, other than being in urban vs rural areas?

if I hadn’t been invited to a wedding at the King Edward I wouldn’t know which King Edward it was named after. And honestly I’d be pissed off if it was VIII

@MerriamWebster Sorry but the dictionary table will “look well in your home or office”? Do you guys know the difference between “well” as an adjective and “well” as an adverb?
