5⃣ Raise tax thresholds for parents of small children. Parents have more costs, and less ability to earn money, than non-parents; and they're already significantly contributing to the country's future by raising their kids.
3⃣ Pare back excessive childcare regulation: childminders, who look after ≤6 kids in their own home, should not have to demonstrate children's progress towards learning and development goals. Finding childcare should be as simple and easy as possible for those who want it.
2⃣ Increase the rate of child benefit for children aged 1-4, funded by a phased decrease in the entitlement for older children. It's mad that parents of toddlers, who may be under extreme financial pressure, are entitled to the same amount as (some) parents of 20 year olds.
We recommend: 1⃣ Allow parents to claim the value of "free hours" and tax free childcare as cash, or as payment towards a provider of their choice. The budget for these in 2025 would provide nearly £3,000 to every child aged 1-4 in the UK- more if eligibility was restricted.
