A 🧵about this election, in historical context: I’m under no illusions: a significant minority of our citizens are desperately unhappy with our system of government and our inclusive values of equality and justice for all. They make it plain, and I get it.

A few people have asked why I vehemently oppose Trump. Let me make this perfectly clear. It's not about politics. I've voted for both parties. It's about me, as a patriot, rejecting a cheating, lying, racist, treasonous, fascist, and vile man who attacks the free press, and wants to lead the country I love. It's really that simple.

As a teenager in Iraq my Jewish grandmother watched her best friend raped and killed and another friend shot along her 8 siblings and her mother. 150,000 Jews lost everything and were forced to leave to Israel, the only country to accept them. My father and his family were part of 105,000 Tunisian Jews who were forced to leave the country after decades of abuse + violence. But you won’t hear the stories of oppression and ethnic cleansing of 850,000 Jews from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). You won’t hear about the many Jews who died when their countries turned on them, nor about the lives and communities we once knew. For many Mizrahi (MENA) Jews the world never recognized our collective trauma and it’s always sidelined. If that’s not enough, when presented with the historical realities of how the Turks and Arabs have oppressed communities all over the Middle East, the international media, scholars and activists from the west will whitewash these crimes of colonialism by claiming the Arab, and later Ottoman Turkish Empires, were peaceful and tolerant, allowing minorities to flourish, even going so far as to say how Europeans led the Turks and Arabs to violence. Minorities in the Muslim World (57 countries in MENA) sought independence separate from the empires. This was true for the Armenians, Georgians, Assyrians, Kurds, Jews and Lebanese Christians. And before them, even the Greeks and the Serbs. And yes, many of these smaller groups of peoples appealed to Western Europeans for help. In response to the national awakening of these smaller groups in the late 1900s, the imperialist nations, the Turks, Arabs and Iranians not only sought to preserve their power but even claimed the land of these nations in a process called irredentism. In a narrative flip, these imperial peoples of the region (particularly the Turks and Arabs) claimed the nations seeking independence were stealing land from them and used violence to retrieve it. From the 1880s until 1923, The Pan-Turks not only sought to unite the various Turkish peoples, but they were also central in claiming the places that Turks had conquered as settler colonialists like Armenia, parts of Greece and the Assyrian parts of present-day Turkey. They were also instigators of genocides in these areas when groups subject to their rule showed any sign of pursuing independence, including the Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians. Turks ensured the Kurds and Assyrians who remained would be subjected to forced assimilation and they expelled all of the Greeks and Armenians from Turkey. Pan-Arabs, who were also active from the 1880s, claimed areas where Arabs had settled under settler colonialism in the Middle Ages and sometimes later, as original Arab homelands. In aiding the British in overcoming the Ottoman Empire, Arab leaders positioned themselves to take over multicultural countries and pursue their own imperialistic goals. Thus, Pan-Arabs forced Arab culture and customs upon the Assyrians, Berbers, Maronites and Egyptian Copts. By the 1940s, they had created the Arab League and tried to Arabize all of North Africa and the Middle East. In fact, Pan-Arabs – even more than the Pan-Turks – were different from the Pan-Germans, for example, in accepting the assimilation of non-Arab peoples as Arabs in principle, even though in practice they still viewed them as different. Hence, the policies of Arabization and forced assimilation. In fact, all of the indigenous peoples of the Middle East – from the Kurds to the Assyrians, to the Jews and the Maronites, many already diminished by mass murder – were present at the Versailles Treaty and called for their national self-determination. As countless of activists push a PR campaign to commemorate the Palestinian Arab refugees of the Arab war on Israel, I wish they had half the sympathy for the millions that were and still are truly oppressed by imperial power. Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov's notes about mankind's first-ever spacewalk on March 18, 1965 aboard Voskhod-2 "Russian cosmonautics – it’s a comedy of horrors. A cosmonaut, who for the first time in the history of mankind ventured into outer space, was unable to get back on board. He was floating on the end of a 5-meter cable above the planet, but when it was time to get back in - it turned out that the spacesuit swelled and did not fit through the airlock. In order to get in, he had to depressurize the spacesuit to 0.27 of Earth's pressure - such pressure corresponds to about 3 kilometers above Everest. Miraculously, he didn't lose consciousness. But then he couldn’t fit through the second airlock. He managed to get into it only by flagrantly violating the instructions - head first, not feet first. He then collapsed next to his comrade. After barely catching breath, the news came - the automated navigation system for returning back to Earth was broken. Again, for the first time in the history of mankind, the spaceship had to return to the planet manually. The one window on the new Voskhod-2 spaceship looked out to the side. Only the stars could be seen through this window. If you started the engine facing the wrong way, instead of returning, you would fly far away and stay there forever. The cosmonauts desperately crawled around the cabin, looked through the ill-fated porthole from different angles, made out from memory where the Big Dipper was and where the Earth should be, and finally started the engine. It probably sounds funny now, but again, for the first time in the history of mankind, they took their seats with the rocket engine running, the acceleration of which was about to turn them into pancakes. Where the spacecraft will take them remained a mystery. They don't remember much of the descent. They woke up, got out. There were snowdrifts up to their waists. It was cold: -30°C (-22°F). The spaceship had a lot of survival equipment - fishing hooks, shark repellent, a single TT pistol, and so on. But they didn't think about the cold. The cosmonauts took off their spacesuits, each poured out 5 liters of sweat, built a fire while naked, wrapped themselves thoroughly and waited, periodically clicking the morse code - 'S.O.S.' They didn't vary the message - what else was there to signal to the whole planet? We are Soviet cosmonauts, we are in the middle of nowhere, we are not well.... The signal was being blocked by trees. The cosmonauts guessed, moved through the snowdrifts. Eventually, the SOS signal was picked up in Bonn. The Germans immediately informed the Kremlin. Our people refused to believe the Germans. And at that time - the only thing the Mission Control Center knew about the missing cosmonauts was that they had landed somewhere in Russia. Hundreds of helicopters were in the air combing the area. At the same time, TV reported that the cosmonauts had landed safely and were resting in a sanatorium. The pause between this message and the appearance of the cosmonauts themselves on the screen was clearly dragging on. Brezhnev couldn't stand it any longer, so he called Korolev and asked what the hell was going on. Korolev angrily replied: 'My business is to launch cosmonauts, yours – to announce. You should hurry up, not me.' Finally, one of the helicopters detected a campfire and two unfortunate cosmonauts near it. But it was impossible to land there. A group of skiers went on foot to clear the path to the site with axes. And gifts rained from the sky - warm clothes and cases of cognac. All the clothes got stuck on the trees, and the cognac cases were shattering all around, the astronauts swore grimly as they dodged them.'

When I used to walk into a patients room, who I knew had been experiencing pain, I would do what I called a “reverse” pain level assessment. The standard assessment is “On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the least pain, and 10 being the most, what number would you give to your pain right now?” The reverse assessment asked “On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the least comfort, and 10 being the most, what number would you give to your comfort right now?” The standard assessment required them to rapidly sort back through all past pain they have felt-thereby bringing THAT pain into their consciousness, and compare it to the pain level they are experiencing in this moment, so they can decide what number is appropriate. The whole process amplifies their pain level, because it it ignites the neural pathways of pain & requires them to focus on PAIN. My reverse assessment asks them to rapidly sort back through all past COMFORT they have ever felt-thereby bringing THAT comfort into their consciousness, and compare it to the comfort level they are experiencing in this moment, so they can decide what number is appropriate. The whole process amplifies their comfort level, because it lights up the neural pathways of comfort, & requires them to focus on COMFORT. Not surprisingly, the patients I was caring for, routinely asked for/needed 15-20% less pain medication than they did during the shift I was relieving, or during the shift that was relieving me, later. This applies to OTHER areas of life, as well. Read it again. There is a part of you that will “get” how this applies to those other areas of life….even if you…don’t. Enjoy.
