People often say we spend "80% of our time on 20% of our people," which can be perceived negatively, but that is not always the case. In #ForwardTogether I shared the following: "Sometimes, you are in the 20 percent. Not in a bad way. Perhaps you’re the opposite of what you perceive has been holding you back in the past. Strangely enough, sometimes a school community you are a part of might not be ready for you. It’s always better when they know that before you’re hired." What I have learned is that no matter how much effort you put into something, many people will always cheer you on, while others will doubt you, regardless of the outcome. Even when you create the best version of yourself, people will not be satisfied. As long as you are honest in your self-assessment, at the end of the day, you wake up to you. You have to be comfortable doing what you believe makes you better. Don't get caught up in either praise or criticism; focus on what elevates you and others.

You're explaining a new process. Students are writing. A few nod along. When you ask, "Any questions?" nobody raises a hand. That might mean they're following. It might also mean a student lost the thread at step two and doesn't know how to say it while everyone else seems ready to move on. Try asking students to circle the first step they couldn't explain to someone else. Or have them finish the sentence, "I was with you until..." Now you have something specific to respond to instead of a room full of silence. Sometimes it's a clearer example. Sometimes you need to slow down or give students time to compare their thinking. Either way, their perspective can change what you teach next.

It’s not what you do… it’s who you are

One of the hardest things after asking a good question is not answering it yourself. A few quiet seconds go by, and it's tempting to offer a hint, reword the question, or move on. Do that often enough, and students may start expecting you to do the thinking for them. Of course, silence doesn't automatically mean students are thinking. Some are working through an idea, others aren't sure where to begin, and a few might just be waiting for someone else to answer. Try having everyone jot down an initial thought before opening the discussion. Then listen to how students explain their reasoning. You'll learn a lot more about what they understand than you will from how quickly hands go up.

There were some students with whom I never could build a relationship. I tried… but I just couldn't make a connection. There were lesson plans that I felt great about… but fell flat in the classroom. There were culture-building ideas that I was enthusiastic about… but they just didn't resonate with the staff. Not everything I tried in education worked. Not even close. I was recently reminded that Babe Ruth led the American League in strikeouts five different seasons. When you swing for the fences, sometimes you miss the ball. The greatest champions aren't people who never fail. They're people who refuse to let failure define them. Think about it. The people who accomplish the most often experience the most failures. Not because they're less capable, but because they keep putting themselves in a position to succeed. They take risks. They try difficult things. They put themselves out there. And sometimes they fail. I'm reminded of the famous words of Theodore Roosevelt: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena..." And later: "Who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming..." There's a lesson here for all of us in education. The goal isn't to avoid mistakes. The goal is to keep learning, keep growing, and keep making a difference. Don't let the fear of failure keep you from doing something that matters. Keep trying new things. Keep trying hard things. And don't give up. You’ve got this… Danny

Sometimes the problem isn’t the quality. It’s the audience. A trait one person calls “too much” might be exactly what someone else values. Your honesty might feel uncomfortable to someone who prefers avoidance. Your ambition might look intimidating to someone who wants you smaller. Your sensitivity might seem inconvenient to someone who doesn’t know what to do with it. That doesn’t mean every criticism should be ignored. Growth still matters. But not every negative reaction is proof that something about you needs fixing. Sometimes the better question is whether you’re asking the wrong people to define what’s valuable.
