For my entire educational career I've listened to these "debates" about teaching and without fail my perspective is almost always "why are we making this either/or"
Summative assessment does not mean one big “at the end” test or assignment. Rather, it means a summing up of all the available evidence.

Once I figured out my planning my teaching was much less effective than my designing their learning, things changed. Start by changing: What am I going to teach today? to How will kids show evidence of learning today? Design for it. Effect size= 0.70 or 1.75 years' learning

My last Lyft driver: I'm in awe of how people can understand math... I gave up on math after 8th gr. I meet so many people who volunteer that they don't like/understand math, yet I still see some people vehemently advocate for teaching math the way that got us here.
@mathillustrated I'm sensing hard divisions between direct instruction and inquiry-based when both are relevant, and we should seek a balance. Some of the examples cited —like inquiry-based means letting a child make bouillabaisse on their own or that these teachers are lazy — are not serious.
Consider this: what if our goal is to prepare students for long term learning and success instead of short term test results?

Taiwanese Canadian.Something I think that is important for teachers to know is when to use explicit instruction (very often!) and when inquiry-based approaches are appropriate and how those two things are not mutually exclusive. That's really where the wisdom of teaching is, IMO.

@MmeLockhartLDSB While I agree with you on the importance of explicit instruction, I don't think this is a good example of inquiry-based learning either. Inquiry-based learning isn't just asking kids what they think something is without any context.

I need to listen to my own rule about not asking people who are not in the classroom about student learning and student classroom learning experiences because if I choose not to listen to my own rule, then I only have myself to blame for whatever misery I bring onto myself.
