A year after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, I’m now even more convinced that the people celebrating his death don’t view it as a political victory, at least not by any normative definition of politics. For the people who say “The personal is political,” the reverse is equally true: the political is personal. Everything is personal for them. They have no agendas, no grand visions, no desires beyond the need for validation of their delusional self-conceptions. They’re not playing at politics with any overarching strategy. This makes them more dangerous, not less. They all tout political identities, calling themselves “activists” or “leftists” or “democratic socialists,” but these are all synonyms for “narcissists.” The people who celebrate his death didn’t fear his effectiveness as a communicator and his ability to unite a big tent coalition. They each viewed his existence as a personal threat, not as a political obstacle. Charlie Kirk challenged their delusional views of selfhood. These people don’t care about the future, in regard to the well-being of others, not even their own children (most of whom have been aborted). They don’t care about other people at all, belonging to a movement only for the validation it supplies. They have nothing to lose if the movement fails, because they don’t care about the movement’s purported goals or the other people involved, each concerned only about herself. Each one will latch on to any movement, according to its convenience. Only death and destruction will feed their need for validation.

Shakespeare placed that line in the mouth of Polonius, an absurd blowhard. He can't follow his own wisdom, as the line continues longer than necessary: "brevity is the soul of wit, / And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes [....]." Polonius can't let brevity be. Neither can the 21st Century individual. The inability to stop, with one brief statement following another, destroys wit and our attention spans.
