In olden days people I think were more proactive. The story of Jesus getting mad and flipping tables of the money changers at the temple for instance. Today when people get mad many won't even flip the channel.

Did you know Captain Cook is often credited as the one who solved the problem with scurvy on long sea voyages? It was far different on his first voyage however, which ended with numerous crew sick from scurvy. That was considered a truly fruitless endeavor.
