PSA: This week was kind of a turning point for AI and cybersecurity. Please take this weekend to do some simple cleanup for your family. Some suggestions:
- Set up a password manager like 1Password and give your spouse or partner access to a shared vault. Teach them how to use it.
- Update your passwords for critical stuff - your email account, your bank or financial stuff, etc. Store in your password manager and use the strongest password you can.
- Use two factor auth for everything you can. SMS is not ideal although better than nothing. Google Authenticator or a passkey is better. Hardware key is safest.)
- Add a sim pin to your phone. Makes it harder to sim jack.
- Update your phone and your computer to the newest releases. Turn auto-updates on.
- Freeze your credit - takes 5 minutes.
- Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN.
- If you’re using claude code or have AI agents that browse the web, they’re probably using Node.js. It’s also vulnerable. Update claude code, update node on your machine.
- If you’re building stuff on your computer, ask claude or grokbot (which is connected to twitter and likely has the most current info) to audit any of your repos for vulnerabilities. Ask grok to make it a scheduled task so it can do this daily - things are moving very quickly in the space right now.
- Consider some light resiliency stuff. This probably sounds silly, but it sounded silly at the beginning of covid too. Having printed out copies of important stuff - especially financial accounts. Having some cash on hand. Having some shelf-stable food and clean water or a water filter. Having a map. Having a generator that can at least power your fridge or some devices. Cheap insurance.
Again, I don’t want to alarm people, but I was taught that you should have a Secure plan, a Comfortable plan, and a Wealthy plan. And it seems pretty clear the secure plan needs to now factor cybersecurity risk as a legit threat. Take a weekend and shore yourself up.

Fantastic essay about Chinese AI labs:
“If there is one thing I’d want to delete from the American discourse, it’s the phrase “China’s AI strategy.”
Every single meeting, be it labs, investors, media, all independently, without my prompting, described domestic competition as more brutal than competing with American labs. When I described the US framing of Chinese AI as a coordinated bloc moving at the direction of the state, people laughed. Not defensively. They found it funny. I was called a stupid ABC (American-born Chinese) more than once because of this.
These labs are actually far less coordinated than US labs are, which should have been obvious to anyone who watched the previous cycles of Chinese tech. I said no analogies, but I’ll allow one because it’s theirs. The last cycle had a name: 百团大战, the War of a Hundred Groupons (it was actually 5000). Hundreds of group-buying companies raised money, undercut each other into oblivion, and Meituan emerged as the victor. This cycle already has one too: 百模大战, the War of a Hundred Models.
What actually exists is an ecosystem of labs relentlessly undercutting each other on price, stealing each other’s researchers, raising against each other, and trying to win a local arms race. Hundreds of labs and neolabs have raised, died, and been replaced, continuously.
The things we experience in the US as hostile acts are mostly the exhaust of that domestic fight. The distillation attacks and the collapsing token prices are not a strategy aimed at American incumbents. They are what a hundred companies do to each other when none of them can win and none of them can stop.”
Everyone has a take on China and AI right now. Very few have actually been to China.
I spent last week in Beijing and Shanghai meeting most of the major model labs, researchers, VCs, and founders building Chinese AI. This trip meant a lot to me beyond the work. My parents were
Netflix has 260 million subscribers. Netflix is betting that 250 million of them never open the settings menu.
One guy did. He worked Netflix customer support for 3 years. Handled 15,000 complaints. He told me something that should change the way you watch tonight:
"Every single complaint I got for 3 years was caused by the same 10 settings. Not bugs. Not content. Settings."
"'Why is my picture blurry?' Because Netflix set your streaming quality to Auto — which doesn't mean best quality. It means lowest quality Netflix can get away with before you notice."
"'Why are my recommendations terrible?' Because 3 people are watching on your profile and the algorithm thinks you're one person who loves true crime, kids cartoons, and Korean dramas at the same time."
"'Why does every movie look like a soap opera?' Because a motion smoothing setting you've never seen is turned on — making a $200 million film look like it was shot on a phone."
"'Why do I scroll for 45 minutes and give up?' Because autoplay previews are feeding the algorithm false data every single time you pause on a thumbnail. Netflix thinks you're interested. You were just reading the description."
"I spent 3 years answering the same 10 complaints. Every single time the fix was the same: 'Let me walk you through your settings.' Every single time the customer said: 'Why didn't Netflix tell me this?'"
"Because Netflix makes more money when you scroll. Not when you find something."
Here are 10 Netflix settings that are ruining your experience right now — and exactly how to fix each one in under 5 minutes:

> Instalas Ollama
> Bajas Qwen3 235B
> Apuntas Claude Code a localhost
To everyone so eager to cancel someone for a tattoo they got at age 22, a drunk text, a selfie they took in the middle of a mental health crisis:
Show us your laptop.
Show us your iCloud.
Open your entire digital life to your worst enemy. No context. No filter. No explanation.
You won’t.
You won’t because you know what I know. Any one of us, frozen at our worst moment, photographed in our lowest hour, looks like a monster. Looks like a stranger. Looks like someone who deserves to be cast out.
That is not who we are.
My mom and baby sister were killed in a car accident when I was just a kid. Cancer took my brother Beau, my best friend and my rock. I battled alcoholism. I battled addiction. I chose the coward’s way out more times than I can count.
For years I believed the defining chapters of my life were written by tragedy, loss, and shame.
I no longer believe that.
Pain can shape us. Loss can humble us. Failures can leave scars that never fully fade. But none of them have the authority to define us.
And it sure as hell ain’t the critic that counts.
That authority belongs to us alone-the person in the arena.
Every setback presents a choice. Play the victim, or cut the bullshit and take ownership for who we become next.
Life does not determine our character. It reveals it.
Again and again we are asked the same question. When shit happens, what next?
We are not defined by what happened to us. We are not defined by the worst photo, the worst text, the worst tattoo, the worst night. We are defined by the person we choose to become. And by the courage to choose that person, every single day.
So before you reach for the gavel - show us your laptop.
You won’t.
The whole world saw mine. And I am still here. Still becoming. Still choosing. Still standing.
That is the only definition that matters.

🚨 do you understand what happened to Stephen Colbert..
24 hours after his final Late Show, Colbert hijacked a tiny public access channel in Monroe, Michigan with Jack White, Eminem, Jeff Daniels and Steve Buscemi.
Now Paramount - the company that just cancelled his show - is mass-blocking every reupload worldwide via Content ID. And the deeper you dig, the worse it looks:
- The finale pulled 6.74M viewers - a weeknight record over 11 years
- Eminem cameoed as "Marshall, the fire marshal" to greenlight torching the set
- The same day Trump posted an AI video of throwing Colbert into a dumpster, Colbert aired footage of himself burning a real one
- Mayday Network and verified journalist Matthew Keys both got blocked globally - for sharing a community access show
Paramount cancelled his show to silence him. Instead they handed him a Streisand-effect comeback 10x bigger than the show ever was.
Paramount is apparently trying to suppress copies of "Only in Monroe" from appearing on other social platforms by filing frivolous copyright notices, even though the show was produced by a public access TV channel and doesn't use their intellectual property...
