A reminder that states spend over $1.7 billion every year on standardized testing. $1.7 BILLION that could go to hire more teachers and counselors, more resources, or increase teacher pay.

#Educators, we need to work to make sure that people understand that Ss have been "learning" for the last year! Perhaps not in the "traditional" view "school" is, but then "school" wasnt working for all Ss anyway. Time to #change the #discussion! Thanks to @torreytrust for this.

The only reason schools are rushing to give a standardized test is to prove that students suffered a learning loss because of the pandemic. They plan to use that data to reprimand teachers and educators while paying billions (collectively) to testing companies.

Two random ideas for ending/reducing math acceleration in K-12 schools: - change university requirements (this recently happened with SAT/ACT scores) - rename high school math classes Here are my thoughts on both.

Tbh we need to stop thinking about forcing kids and teachers back into buildings this school year and start planning, collaboratively and realistically, for SY21-22. We need to channel resources and energy NOW lest we go through another year of uncertainty and frustration.

Here's how I'm doing my tests: They have 2-3 days to do the test, I provide feedback without a grade, students revise for up to full credit. I don't think tests need to be as high stakes as we make them out to be. They are here to learn.

Students have cameras off. I only really know how they're doing if they can formulate a response/question/comment to put in chat. That's harder than making a confused face. Can I have a "class visual" where kids could literally just update their current facial expression?

Hey faculty! As someone who just read 500 letters of rec (as grad admissions chair), I’m here to tell you that no one EVER uses the adjective “courteous” to recommend a white man. Please think more carefully about the gendered and racialized way you speak about strong students.
