Let Us Pray: Abortion Death Pill Horror Hits Kentucky “For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” – Psalm 1:6 Unfortunately, there is another abortion death pill horror story, and this time it hits close to home in Bowling Green, KY. Abdullah Mohmand has now been formally charged with fetal homicide for trying to kill his unborn baby. Mohmand tried to pressure his girlfriend into having an abortion, but she refused to do so. This led to Mohmand attempting to kill his girlfriend’s unborn baby by tricking her into taking the abortion pill, misoprostol, by switching it with her prescription medication. The Kentucky State Police, after executing a search warrant, found the medication and it was later confirmed to be misoprostol. The Kentucky State Police also located the FedEx envelope that the death pill was shipped in. It was shipped to Mohmand’s apartment using his girlfriend’s name. It should be noted that this happened and can still happen, in part, because the Trump administration still has not repealed the Biden-era guidelines for abortion death pills. This allows individuals to receive an abortion death pill through the mail without even seeing a doctor. Even worse, men can obtain these death pills by giving a woman’s name. They don’t need to show any proof of identity, and that is exactly what is leading to these real-life horror stories. The abortion death pill is illegal here in Kentucky, and yet this story once more confirms that these deadly pills are being illegally trafficked into our state. The Trump Administration needs to take action now to stop the mail-order availability of these death pills by repealing the Biden-era guidelines. The Kentucky General Assembly must also act to give more enforcement teeth to abortion pill trafficking. Until this happens, we should expect to see more cases like this, where a man can get a death pill mailed to his house and try to kill his own child by simply swapping his girlfriend’s pills. LET US PRAY… Father, please empower the Trump Administration to act swiftly to protect women and the unborn from the deadly abortion drug. Lord, may justice be served in this disturbing and horrific case. Father, strengthen us to effectively advocate for pro-life measures that will protect Kentucky women and unborn children from the deadly abortion drug. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I know I’ve been posting a lot recently, but as Fr. Richard John Neuhaus used to say, “it’s a target-rich environment” right now. The governor of Massachusetts just signed into law a statute that permits abortion up until the moment of birth, as long as mother and doctor give the go-ahead. Please understand what this means. A fully-formed child, moments before exiting the birth canal, can be eviscerated, chopped into pieces, have its head crushed or skin burned off—all under the full protection of Massachusetts law. What I found particularly gross was the reaction of the entirely female crowd around the female governor of Massachusetts as she signed this barbaric provision into law. They were clapping and cackling with delight because what can only be called infanticide can now be practiced with impunity in their state. I’m old enough to remember when Mario Cuomo, the devoutly Catholic governor of New York, admitted that, though he found abortion personally repugnant, he was, after tortured wrestling with his conscience, willing to give it limited protection of law. How far we have fallen from agonized and conflicted Cuomo to the present governor of Massachusetts and her entourage gleefully applauding the murder of children.

In a recent interview, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, former grand chancellor of the John Paul II Institute on Marriage and Family Life, confirmed the worst suspicions that many of us had. He admitted that the changes he made at the Institute during the Pope Francis years were designed to initiate a "very profound" reform of the idea of the natural law. Instead of absolute moral norms grounded in a keen understanding of the basic goods, he and his colleagues were proposing a moral theory rooted in historical discernment of subjective and cultural experience--not an "armchair theology" but one operating "within history and within people's lives." This, of course, is the language of trendy postmodernism, and it is dangerous indeed. Allow me to illustrate the principle with one example. Is slavery wrong? Intrinsically wrong? Wrong no matter what public opinion polls say about it, no matter what the current consensus on it might be? I imagine any decent person would say yes. But that yes is predicated upon precisely what the tradition calls the natural law and the basic goods. There are some values so fundamental that acts repugnant to them are by their very nature wicked. If you want a highly articulate presentation of this idea, go to St. John Paul II's Veritatis Splendor. If we say that this is just "armchair theologizing" and that morality is a function of ever-shifting cultural and experiential data, then why couldn't slavery be justified? One of the very smartest persons that ever lived, the philosopher Aristotle, thought it was; extremely bright and morally upright persons in our country, well into the 19th century, thought it was permissible. Who is to say whether the consensus might shift back again? Who is to say that "lived experience" might come to justify it? What any truly coherent moral program requires is the very thing that Archbishop Paglia and his colleagues were endeavoring to eliminate, namely, absolute moral norms. Ridding ourselves of these in the name of freedom or pastoral sensitivity actually renders moral discourse dysfunctional, just as relativizing the basic principle of logic would render any rational conversation impossible. The Archbishop's interview, frankly, reminded me of the discussions I had at the Synod on Synodality with some of my German colleagues. Under the rubric of the development of doctrine, they were eager to relativize or radically change the principles undergirding classical morality.
