Why are older adults much more susceptible to severe Covid? Multiple liabilities: reduced ability to clear the virus, immune signaling dysregulation, and an untoward pro-inflammatory response of genes and proteins science.org/doi/10.1126/sc… @ScienceTM
@EricTopol @ScienceTM But how does this in turn explain LongCovid is predominantly found in relatively younger adults (but can also affect children, teenagers and people in their twenties) after mild(er) covid?
@EricTopol @ScienceTM As a layman, I have a hard time distinguishing between severe and mild covid. In a world accepting zero mitigation, we should be contemplating multiple reinfections and cumulative damage 💔 #CovidIsNotOver x.com/zalaly/status/… x.com/inkblue01/stat…

@EricTopol @ScienceTM This all makes sense and demonstrates why we need nuanced (future) policies for any viral infection.
@EricTopol @ScienceTM What is your advice to people who are already 70+ yo and seem to get a year older every year? It seems increasingly difficult to avoid exposure to other humans who breathe unmasked in my direction. Already getting every vaccine booster as allowed.
@EricTopol @ScienceTM Are we (old people) going to get a better vaccine anytime soon? 🙏🏼
@EricTopol @ScienceTM To say nothing about the increase in mast cell activation after a trigger like covid worsens latent MCAS, which we know it does. Seniors accumulate new triggers as their immune systems age. It's still treatable.
@EricTopol @ScienceTM Im wondering will some good come of covid in accelerateing our knowledge of the ageing immune system and ways to rejuvenate it long term
@EricTopol @PeterHotez @ScienceTM So the same reasons all older people are more vulnerable to all disease and accidents.
