In a world which values and encourages speed, greed and noise - leading to chaos, a walk in nature is a breath of fresh air which favours quiet, gratitude, going at our own pace and slowing down when necessary - leading to calm. 💚 #LandscapePhotography #NaturePhotography

@5149jamesli I’ve done a little digging into this and The Nature Conservancy is the GLOBAL NONPROFIT that has purchased the leases from the farmers. The land is all federally owned land. President Trump and Elon really need to look into this.

🚨 Gavin Newsom & his allies just forced 12 historic family farms & dairies out of Point Reyes National Seashore in California. They claim it’s about saving the environment — but the truth couldn't be more different. Here is the true story — and it's heartbreaking. ⬇️🧵1/

The story of Animas peak in NM illustrates how easily access is lost without true public ownership. Much of the NM bootheel was owed by the Grey Ranch, since the late 1800s. As was common in older times, the Grey Ranch informally allowed public access, they didn't "post." My dad climed Animas peak in the 1970s while under Grey ownership. In 1990, the heirs (who never really restricted access) sold or donated the property to the Nature Conservancy for its permanent protection. There were hopes that the property would be incorporated into the adjoining Coronado national forest, but in a very "unclear" process the entire 321K acres ended up incorporated into the new "Diamond A" ranch. The Diamond A proceeded to aggressively prohibit public access, and seems to function largely as a hunting preserve for the super-rich who fly in. The end result of this debacle is the loss of long-standing public access to one of the most interesting and remote peaks in New Mexico.

If you don’t have endangered species or other wildlife, you don’t need to conserve land for a habitat.

Wyoming lawmakers want Congress to let the Bureau of Land Management kill healthy wild horses. 🐴 State Sen. Ide (R-Wyo.) and Rep. Wharff (R-Wyo.) co-chair a legislative committee. It's weighing a resolution that asks Congress for three things. 1. Let BLM kill healthy wild

Good morning from Madera Canyon in the Davis Mountains Preserve in far West Texas. To help preserve this area, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) established the 32,844 acre Davis Mountains Preserve. Subsequent land acquisitions combined with conservation easements on adjoining properties have allowed TNC to protect nearly 110,000 acres of the Davis Mountains region for future generations of Texans to enjoy. The TNC opens this area to specific weekend hikes in the summer and fall each year. 😎

7,000 sharks. Caught, then thrown back, dead or dying. Not an accident. That's what happened the last time these waters were opened to commercial fishing.🦈 The ban that stopped it is gone. Right now, fishery managers are working out exactly how to reopen three Pacific marine monuments to commercial fishing, including Papahānaumokuākea, the largest fully protected conservation area in the United States. The order that made this possible came from Trump. "We're reclaiming our maritime heritage, empowering American fishermen and putting American consumers first," Trump said. "America's fishermen have never had a better ally in the White House than Donald Trump." These waters aren't empty ocean. Palmyra Atoll, one of the monuments in this fight, has one of the highest densities of predators found anywhere on Earth, blacktip and grey reef sharks patrolling coral colonies the size of city buses, a food chain still fully intact. Tuna swim hundreds of miles just to feed here, because in these nutrient-poor waters, atolls act like "bustling cafés," according to Nature Conservancy scientist Alex Wegmann. That's exactly what commercial fishing boats are chasing. And when they cast lines for tuna, sharks get caught too, not the target, but the cost. That intact food chain, sharks included, is what's actually on the hook. Papahānaumokuākea isn't just protected water. Its very name honors two ancestral deities, Papahānaumoku, the earth mother, and Wākea, the sky father, whose union Native Hawaiians believe created the islands themselves. In Hawaiian tradition, this is where the boundary sits between the world of the living and Pō, a sacred darkness that is the source of all creation and where ancestral spirits return after death, becoming deified. Their creation chant, the Kumulipo, names the very first living thing ever born here: Koʻa, the coral polyp, born before starfish, before sea cucumbers, before anything else that lives. Solomon Kaho'ohalahala, a Native Hawaiian conservationist, called commercial fishing here "an affront to Native Hawaiian practices and beliefs." Given what these waters mean, that's not a euphemism. It's a fight over sacred ground. This isn't the first time this fight has happened. Trump tried to open these same waters in his first term. Conservation groups sued. They won. Biden restored the protections. Then in February, Trump opened a different monument entirely, the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts in the Atlantic, to commercial fishing. NOAA skipped public comment altogether, calling it "unnecessary." Conservation groups sued in May. That case still isn't resolved, and commercial fishing is happening there right now. NOAA Administrator Neil Jacobs put his name on it directly: "This historic action will lead to more U.S.-caught fish on American tables," he said. This isn't Jacobs' first tour doing this. He held this exact same post during Trump's first term too, appointed by the same president, back for round two. Now he's back, with a new proclamation, on more monuments, including the one Native Hawaiians call the place where all life begins, and where their ancestors return after death. Some things aren't supposed to be for sale. 🦋HumanityUnited #DensUnited
