gotta let go of the idea that record breaking protests leads to accomplished political objectives. we set records with 2020 actions then elected a vocal advocate of police. then sat on our hands until it was time to blame him for a bipartisan century-long colonial effort.

It is Passover tonight and a good reminder that Jewish existence has always been marginalised and endangered but that isn't a case to seek colonial power, it's a reason to act in solidarity with other marginalised and oppressed peoples.

Maybe you sign one petition here or there but mostly angling to get the next feature. Power ruins the soul, friends. Literature knows this.
I’m at a point with this and with other media where I’ve accepted that to many writers and journalists the big institutions, despite rapidly eroding prestige, mean everything to them, the culminations of their elitist lives. The silence I’ve seen from my “peers” is unforgivable.
These campus protests remind me of being trapped in a uni building in Chile in 1991 just after Pinochet. We were stuck, and teargassed. Students tipped desks out of windows. I learned if you can't find water to wet the bandana covering your nose and mouth you can use urine.
I’m sorry, but elections are won in October and late October at that. Most Americans don’t have a memory that goes past about 10 days or so.
fuck fascists with & fascists without badges & fuck being "peaceful." know the stakes. "the peace of the powerful is the silent war waged against the dispossessed."
Another day proving that the two limitless emotions are grief and love.
I've officially re-opened to queries today after a long hiatus away from my query inbox, so here's an updated #mswl of what I'm looking for these days:
unbelievable that I'm supposed to give Columbia/Barnard students an exam on political theories of freedom after this
Aw Paul. Paul Auster was one of the random authors I picked up when I was trying to figure out who to read in my undergrad days. I saw The Invention of Solitude and thought, NO I INVENTED SOLITUDE who's this guy! A book that helped me realize my father was just a person, like me.
Amidst police violence at Columbia, CUNY and UCLA, the news that my friend Paul Auster has died. In 1968 he was one of the Columbia student occupiers, fleetingly captured by British filmmaker Peter Whitehead in a documentary called The Fall
In a year Shafik will be speaking to Davos from a cushy World Bank post about global citizenship or whatever. Students protesters will be navigating hellish legal battles, maybe still nursing injuries and trying to figure out how to pay off tens of thousands of dollars in debt
It was a display, a choreographed Super Bowl of military prowess. The language that our government speaks to its citizens it’s disgusting. The threats and the deployment of spectacular violence is shameful. The preening of power is pathetic.
I have covered tons of protests over the years and the cop response to Columbia University tonight was more than I’ve ever seen. It felt like they were using these student protestors as an excuse to play with their military toys.
You shouldn’t be able to be president of a college or a university without working as a faculty member (tenure or professional track) for at least ten years.
It is worth noting the oldest university in the European tradition, the University of Bologna, arose out of mutual aid societies to protect foreign students from collective punishment. What students are doing across the country is a return to exactly what a university should be
The shit at UCLA is why we need abolition politics. Make no mistake: agitators are aggressive against the encampments *because* the police and state and university are in tacit coalition with them, because those forces want the encampments gone. Think it through.
Noticing some folks reasoning that particular students don't deserve a militant police response bc they are "peaceful." I don't care if students break windows, shove back, or throw things; none of them deserve a militarized police response. They're protesting a genocide.
So first the students are threatened with suspension and when that doesn’t work, this is the next step? Because they had the nerve to protest the horror we have all been witnessing?
CNN's @miguelmarquez: "I've covered lots of this sort of stuff around the world, and i've never seen this many police moving into one area."
@JYSexton Vindicating based on everything I have read about socialist history and yet fully terrifying
Helen Vendler was an absolute master at saying a hard no to invitations I remember when an old colleague popped in to invite her to "come for a getaway" at his beach house She said, "Thank you, Warner, but I don't like to 'get away'" Inspiring!
We’re experiencing the radicalization of the center and the middle white class, which is something that accompanies authoritarianism I knew it was coming but I didn’t expect it would feel this horrific. It’s one thing to see it on the page and another to live through it yourself
5 minutes old and she’s already so sick of them
