I am begging people to wrap their minds about the relationship between “million” and “billion.” A billion is not ten million, and it’s not a million million. It’s a thousand million. 😅

Why do bad things happen to good people? I don’t think God is constantly intervening in the universe to right every wrong.

@emilykmay My life! Just about any small town will offer exactly what you’re describing. 7,000 people, one block from downtown, very affordable.

@GrantSlatton To prevent exploitation. Putting borrowed money to profitable use requires conditions that mostly didn’t exist in antiquity, so it was mostly financing for gambling & other net negatives.

Jesus said he came to fulfill rather than abolish the law, but Paul later says he did in fact abolish it. Someone tried to tell me on TikTok the other day that Jesus said “I am here to uphold the rules in the Old Testament” 🤦‍♂️

Is the Old Testament “inspired”? I say yes, because the NT does, but let’s not make that word do too much heavy lifting. TT: evidencedrivenworldview

@JW_mktresearch @jamiedupree A billion is 1000x a million, not 10x. The point is not that they fabricated the larger number. It's that they got "million" and "billion" mixed up, and that's not good because they are very different.

Maybe Christianity should stop asking people to believe things that obviously aren't true, like Young Earth Creationism. Just might stop driving people away from God.

Share believing in God without a doubt. Republicans 1988: 66% 2022: 63% (-3) Independents 1988: 59% 2022: 51% (-8) Democrats 1988: 63% 2022: 39% (-24)

Everyone: "Which SBC clergy have been credibly accused of abuse?" SBC: "Nobody knows."

Christa Brown @ChristaBrown777

So... after years of trailing out hollow words, impotent task forces, & phony dog-n-pony shows of purported reform, @SBCExecComm straight up says that a database of clergy abusers "is not a focus for us." Priority is same as always: Protecting the institution. #ThisistheSBC

To be clear: Christian Nationalism = Bad People leaving the church = Bad But that doesn't mean the two are linked.

I would guess this is directionally incorrect at the moment. Nationalist-leaning churches are probably doing better than average re: membership. And the churches that reject nationalism the most vigorously are the ones dying the fastest.

Brain-dead take. The scandal wasn't the abuse, which sadly happens in all kinds of organizations, yes. The scandal was the cover-up, which was a choice. Shuffling priests around after credible allegations of abuse is RICO stuff.

Hunter Ash @ArtemisConsort

The Catholic priest sex abuse scandal was, in a sense, fake. Not because any of the claims of abuse were fake, but because this is not a uniquely Catholic problem. Rates of child sexual abuse are high in all professions that deal with children.

Every large organization that deals with human beings needs to figure out how it will respond to sexual abuse. If an organization's response is to cover it up, that organization is a criminal enterprise—and should be prosecuted as such, and sued out of existence.

The conclave of cruelty commences -- i.e., the SBC Executive Committee meeting. Their long recalcitrance on abuse reform is wholly indefensible but, for public perception, they'll puff themselves up with posturing about "progress." #ThisistheSBC baptistnews.com/article/please…

@JeremyWingert79 My sense is that there's always a considerable number of private plane crashes that kill 1-2 people, and have almost nothing to do with the FAA. It's just inherently risky. The commercial & military crashes do seem out of the ordinary.

@AlanLevinovitz I really tried to steel-man their insistence that it's a non-issue and all we need to do is allocate adequate institutional resources. But it sure seems like the people saying "no one's faking" are most likely the ones who are faking.
