Near 1,000 ft. at Curacao on our submersible dives last week. Sea fan covered with brittle stars and crabs; an old fishing boat with sharktooth moray and conger eel (zoom in at bottom right of boat); and a deep-sea toad (Chaunax pictus). ⁦@NMNH⁩ ⁦@Marineiac_Matt⁩

With ⁦@Marineiac_Matt⁩ in the Curasub submersible off Curacao in the southern Caribbean. Destination 1,000 ft. to show him the mesophotic and rariphotic deep reefs and retrieve 11 temperature loggers. Mission accomplished! #happytobebackunderwater

In addition to studying anatomy, biologists can use X-rays to learn about animal food preferences. When museum specialist Sandra Raredon X-rayed this longnose batfish for the 2012 exhibit “X-ray Vision: Fish Inside Out,” she found a surprise: a stomach full of shells.
