China just responded to the AI slowdown, and it's f*cking terrible. Two days ago the CEO of Anthropic begged the world to slow AI down before a rogue swarm takes over the internet. China's Foreign Ministry just called it "fearmongering" and flatly refused. Trump also dismissed it the same day, saying the U.S. is leading China on AI and that "whoever wins AI, wins." Elon agreed, Sam agreed, the builders agreed and the governments just said no. As a result, just a couple of hours ago Sam Altman said OpenAI won't wait for any law to act, they're starting the safety work themselves. Now Trump and Xi meet on Sept 24 to discuss AI governance. Things are moving incredibly fast, and where this ends is anyone's guess. The good news is the companies are taking this into their own hands.
