Mutinous army? They were old anti-British elements of Scindia Darbar. 1843 is clearly a proxy war, with alibi for royal family. But British sources are clear about the imperial ambitions. The legality of intervention was contested in Parliament itself (Hansard, 8 March 1844).
But then why are people saying that this was Scindias fighting British when it was literally a mutinous army being put down by the Scindia's Defensive Ally, who allowed them to retain what territory they had, and decided what subsidiary forces they could hold after 1803?

In reality, Raghuji the Great was responsible for far more territorial expansion. On the naval front, Kanhoji Angre secured the western coast against European powers by taking on four distinct maritime empires without ever losing a war. It’s a common misconception that the empire's downfall was solely the fault of the later Peshwas. The real problems began with Bajirao himself, who signed a treaty seeking British assistance against the Angres. Following the death of Chhatrapati Shahu, the Peshwas took this a step further, routinely allying with the British against other Indian states.
