After the post-election violence of 2008, retired Vice Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Humphrey Njoroge, wrote a piece heavily critical of the military high command, stating that all of them should have faced a court martial for dereliction of duty and complicity in instability. According to the celebrated infantry General, a top intellectual who has authored a book, once there was clear breakdown in law and order, the military should have intervened to save lives and properly. By this time, regional leaders and military Generals across the East African zone, led by Rwandese President @PaulKagame, had also pointed out that the Kenyan military was shirking responsibility by watching Kenyans die at the hands of militias. For them, the problem was two-fold; one, the economic implications of deterioration of order in Kenya, which had the major port and the North Corridor that fed the region, and two, the national security risks in their countries of the region's largest economy fell to militias. In subsequent command councils, the General ranks lay down a threshold for future interventions. The unwritten rule is that once 200 civilians are killed in confrontations with police in peacetime, the police have lost the technical ability and the command credibility to contain the population. The military intervenes. Often, this threshold also includes the breaching of of symbols of state authority and democracy, like State House and/or Parliament respectively. The military does not come to the streets to fight the people, but as the only credible institution left at that time, which the people would rely on for a possible transition. This is why militaries entering the streets during crisis are universally welcome with flags and flowers. I have noticed since yesterday that a clever narrative is being run in the country, that paints the anticipated deployment of Kenyan military to the streets as a preparation for a massacre. Obviously, this is being done in the belief that the Gen Z protestors do not understand the military well enough to know the lie. Indeed, I have heard it said that the Githurai Massacre happened last night because "they blocked the military from reaching town". There was no military trying to reach town at that time, and military hardware comes prepared for war and offroad conditions; they don't need a tarmacked road to go somewhere. There is no military hand in the Githurai matter. It is important for me to say this; the military does not and will not shoot civilians. When they are deployed, you should come out in large numbers with flowers, flags and water to greet them. They will be the first sign that you have defeated the civilian regime and its police. Next, you should keep vigil with them in the streets and remind them that you won't leave..so that you can tempt them to go all the way to State House. Militaries not only frown on shooting unarmed civilians, but when serving in joint task forces with the police, where the official command is the military one, do not allow policemen to kill civilians. For comfort, let me repeat that the tribal makeup of the Kenyan military is so balanced today that even Ruto knows he can't use them to do his bidding. Kikuyus have had 20 years to shore up their numbers, while the other tribes are so tired of Ruto that their kinsmen in the military will not join the Ruto games. I can declare that if the army is seen on the streets, it will be evidence of the shaky ground on which this regime stands and a victory for the young demonstrators. Now that he has been forced to void the Finance Bill 2024, I don't think he has any stable ground to stand on should the people refuse to budge.

There is universal consensus that the @micchequepod episode featuring Sen. @edwinsifuna was a hit. It has generated heat both ways; among those who aver that Sifuna scored a political coup by reaching out to the younger generation via a medium and language that appeal to them, and those whose conclusion was that "Sifuna's popularity is because the Senate is about easy talk and the hard work is ahead as Governor". Part of the reason Kenya's political space is an impunity paradise is because the enablers of corruption and their supporters consistently peddle the narrative that the opposition is "just talking". In typical Stockholm Syndrome, the slave always thinks his rescuer is being too dramatic by addressing the issues around slavery. Sifuna has carried out his role as an opposition Senator and party SG with credibility and focus. Anyone who wants to judge him as Governor or President must wait until he holds those positions. An opposition legislator's core mandate revolves around oversight of government (both national and devolved) and to protect the interests of the common man in national development. Again, if you want to judge him on use of resources, give him those resources to manage then let's talk. The newspapers are awash with stories of how Governor @SakajaJohnson, a few months into office, was already acquiring property worth billions. This money may have been taken from budgets for hospitals, ECDEs, TVETs, county roads or even Dishi na County program. Every time a Governor becomes an overnight billionaire, some programs meant for the poor become victims of the theft. Rather than lament that Sifuna is shining too much, how about you cry about your Governor stashing away billions while your city gets flooded to the neck? Surprisingly, some of the evident negative reactions to the podcast have been friendly fire. I have seen snide remarks from supporters of Westlands MP @HonTimWanyonyi , who have decided that Sifuna's rising profile can only mean that he wants to be Nairobi Governor, ostensibly at the expense of Tim. The Senator has been clear that he doesn't want to be Governor, yet. Sifuna and Tim are travelling two different journeys, albeit on the same side. Wanyonyi supporters are behaving like village witchdoctors who, even when they themselves have no children sitting exams, are jealous of other people's children passing exams. Jealousy is witchcraft by another name. Sifuna has played very deferential politics towards Wanyonyi and has been a committed partner in the ambitions of both. He has never given Tim or his supporters any reason to think he wants to challenge their man for Governor or even to disrupt that ambition. People must arrest their jealousy before it raptures their gall bladders. Back to the podcast, it is satisfying that it generated the heat it did. The interviewers did a commendable job in running a high quality episode that was both hilarious and informative, delivering a very watchable clip. There should be more of the same. Speaking truth to power for a firebrand is a full time occupation. Just like Raila before him, we wouldn't be surprised if people who line up to vote the scum of the earth suddenly find Sifuna disagreeable because he reminds you that your leaders cannot sell you donkey shit as fertiliser and you should not be taxed to death. Those who stand on the right side of history will stand with Sifuna as they did Raila. Those who prefer to starve to death because they are unwilling to admit that their leaders are looting the country dry are welcome to wallow in ignorant bliss!

There is a serious discussion to be had about responsible command. With great power comes great responsibility. You have a loyal and patriotic force ready to serve their country but you have airheads up the chain of command who put commercial interests and their own egos at the center of decision making. It’s easier to wash off that egg on your face, an embarrassment you brought upon yourself, than the blood of patriots from the streets of Haiti. Come off it!
