Note to western journalists: don’t suck up PRC propaganda. Bamboo scaffolding is widely regarded as safe - a craft in Hong Kong of which they’re rightly proud. Early indications are that the netting was the cause of this tragedy.

I don’t quite understand where does this “bamboo scaffolding led to the fire” come from. The bamboos scaffolding after the fire is still mainly intact. It’s the netting that’s flammable, not the bamboo scaffolding. It started with the netting, as multiple videos show.

These videos surprised a lot of people: bamboo does burn, but not the way social media describes it. It doesn’t explode. It doesn’t melt. It chars slowly — similar to timber — and sometimes even stays standing. So maybe the question isn’t: ‘Why is HK still using bamboo?’ But: ‘Why don’t we separate the performance of bamboo from the failures of safety around it? Engineers, builders, HK folks — what do you think after seeing the videos?

ALIEN was released 44 years ago today. One of the definitive science fiction/horror movies, its influence is still seen to this day. The behind-the-scenes story of how the film was made is a fascinating one... A THREAD 1/38
