Why do good people think NYC has a subway because of the Great Blizzard of 1888? New Yorkers were strongly opposed to underground transit, even into the 1890s. They were not impressed with London (steam or electric), but rather fond of elevated trains! bit.ly/44aWRVi
LaGuardia Airport Gravitator: a faster and cheaper alternative to the now-cancelled LGA AirTrain. Gravity-assisted acceleration allows for higher urban speeds than any existing mode of travel, and it brings the cost way down. Here's a mini prospectus: bit.ly/Gravitator
The 18th Century Blackstonian Wedge is still the legal foundation of underground property rights (including my 2012 Barron's Dictionary). The MTA uses eminent domain to acquire subsurface easements for new subway lines--even when there's zero impact to property above. Fancy that!

@AlecStapp Interesting! I understand Tokyo’s land use regulations are more liberal than most other global cities. But I also wonder if the high number of housing starts in Tokyo is due, in part, to the popularity of timber homes that are typically replaced after 20-40 years.

@MarketUrbanism Part of the problem lies in the increasingly elaborate designs & specifications, such as safety & security features. Competitive bidding on construction doesn’t help here. There’s little incentive to make the design simpler or more economical, we just build less of it.@alon_levy

@jasoncrawford Hmm. I’ve always wondered about this. Sounds like the idea that before Christopher Columbus everyone thought the world was flat. There were many genuine obstacles to traction, including bad track geometry and suspension for the driving wheels to maintain contact with rails.
My alternative to #AirTrain LaGuardia: a high-speed, single-tube underground shuttle. 10% cheaper and 40% faster to midtown (e.g. 26 minutes to Grand Central vs. 43 minutes). It’s also faster and cheaper than a cab (except at night), and 30+ minutes faster than transit today.
@MarketUrbanism NYC has a gridiron street plan, in part, because “straight-sided and right-angled houses are the most cheap to build and the most convenient to live in” (Commissioners’ Plan of 1811)

@MarketUrbanism CapEx on the New York City subway is way up since the capital programs began in the 1980s, now more than when the system was being built new (in real terms). There is some competitive procurement in construction, but we need market forces on the *design* of new projects.
