In last 10 years, Govt of Pakistan has on avg spent 60% of Net Revenue on Interest payments, in FY 19, Interest payments were 103% of the net revenue. Principal is not even added into it. Read full report on our website in reports section: ipr.org.pk
This is due to the high interest rates of the debts we secured and failed to draw any productive benefit from it(mainly exports) 2/3
In the last twenty years, Pakistan has paid external creditors more than it has received from them. Yet its external debt has grown by over 200% from $ 37.2 B to $ 112.9 B. We may have paid back the original loan more than once and still owe it to the creditor. 1/3

The percentage of direct taxes must increase while indirect taxation should be minimized 2/2
Digitization is crucial for improving tax collection as it documents the economy. The world has moved in that direction and so is Pakistan.The current Governor State Bank is a man with out of the box solutions & is bringing lots of structural changes which will be beneficial. 1/2
However, historically everytime Pakistan exits an imf program and growth picks up, it is hit by the same current account deficit problem and the cycle repeats itself. We need to find a long term solution to this persistent problem
IMFs economic model across the world is to suppress growth, tighten monetary policy, increase taxes & suppress imports to alleviate the current account deficit and create enough foreign reserves through exports and investment to put the country in a position to return the debt.
The US is a superpower because of its revenue collection system, the IRS. Pakistan can also become a major power if the revenue collection system is reformed 2/2
I had the privilege to serve as SAPM Revenue for 3 years and am glad that I worked in a division where performance is easily measurable. Revenue collection is measurable and is basically what runs the country. 1/2

You can only have financial autonomy if you have a sizable amount of foreign reserves and are not reliant on donors. If we keep going to donors, economic solutions will also be provided by donors but what we need is a home grown solution to our economic problems. 1/2

An overvalued rupee has been a persistent problem for our economy and has led us to seek IMF bailout packages 23 times. It is like a drug which gives us temporary pleasure as imports become cheaper, food inflation decreases, and consumption led growth takes place 1/2
