On today's Zambian Independence Day, we salute our friends in Zambia!🇿🇲 I am working overtime to finish my biography of Miriam Makeba. (She had me write her autobiography years ago.) Here she is at Zambia's 10th anniversary on October 24, 1974. Too bad about the guy playing the piano for her, I understand his musical career never took off.

A nation can raise its own flag and still remain intellectually colonized. If its children learn to admire foreign histories while knowing little of their own, political independence has not yet reached the classroom.

The same way Israel doesn't want Iran to have nuclear weapons is the same way Western powers have spent years trying to control Africa's industrial development. They want to decide what Africa can and cannot.

National development begins when a population stops treating collective responsibility as somebody else's problem.

They taught African children, in colonial schools, that their continent had no history before Europe arrived. Let that sit for a moment. They took children whose grandparents had lived in functioning kingdoms, whose oral traditions carried the history of empires spanning centuries, whose communities had legal systems and agricultural science and trade relationships and philosophical frameworks for understanding the world. And they sat those children in European-designed classrooms and taught them that their past was darkness. That their ancestors had been waiting. Waiting without direction or achievement or meaningful civilization. Waiting to be found. That the story of their people began when Europeans arrived to begin it. This is not ancient history. The generation of Africans who received this education are alive. Their children are alive. The psychological work required to recover from being taught that your people had no history. To excavate your own past not from lived memory but from archives that were often kept by the people who had the strongest interest in what was and wasn’t in them. That work is ongoing. And the people who created the need for that work are still explaining that colonialism, on balance, was not so bad.

Britain hanged Dedan Kimathi in 1957 and buried him where no one could find him. Kimathi led the Mau Mau fighters, who fought British colonial rule in Kenya. He was captured on 21 October 1956, sentenced on 19 November, and hanged at Kamiti prison near Nairobi on 18 February 1957. He was 36. The colonial authorities put his body in an unmarked grave inside the prison. The likely reason was to stop Kenyans from turning it into a shrine. The test of hiding a grave is whether the person gets forgotten. It failed. Kenya has a Kimathi Street in Nairobi, a Kimathi University of Technology and a Kimathi Stadium in Nyeri. A statue of him stands in Nairobi. The grave stayed lost. His widow, Mukami, asked for his remains for decades and died in 2023 without them. In 2019 a foundation said it had identified the site, but gave no details and no exhumation followed. When Nelson Mandela visited Kenya in 1990 and asked to see the grave, nobody could show him. A country can have brilliant individuals and still be a dysfunctional society. Individual intelligence does not automatically translate into collective competence. You can have millions of smart people living in a system that makes almost everything unnecessarily difficult.
