Marketers need to ask themselves an existential question about #chatGPT and generative AI. Is it fracking? Or is it a diamond asteroid? Here's what I mean. In the early 2000s, most experts spoke of 'peak oil'. Fracking unlocked massive new reserves and kicked off a new multi-decade boom in oil and gas. This new supply filled a gap, but it did not create such a surplus as to send prices hurling toward zero. In the world of asteroid mining, there is talk of finds of unfathomable value; the $700 quintillion asteroid. This is mostly meaningless link bait. They are what happens when you apply a value predicated on scarcity to a scarcity-ending find. If we did lasso a diamond the size of Texas, the value of diamonds would collapse. Speaking of meaningless link bait, how does chatGPT change the fundamental value of content marketing? So how does this impact marketers? How should they rethink their strategy in a #gpt world? A huge part of the digital economy has been built around inbound marketing and attention mining. We take small amounts of content and expand it to appease Google, both for SEO and ad monetization. The cost of producing content is going to zero. The question is, will the value also go to zero? Is this the greatest moment in history to be a digital publisher, able to conquer new niches in days? Or is this the end of days? These are the right questions to ask: Does Google stop being a place where people go to find answers? When? How fast are these technologies adopted by marketers? How fast are they adopted by consumers? Should you be rapidly running away from text and towards frontiers that are more difficult to automate like video? Should you instead use this falling cost of content and rising content velocity to finally achieve the dream of personalization, generating 1:1 "for you" content? Do you own or borrow users? Do you have authority and trust? Do you have unique access to data / raw information? Do you have unique insight into what users want?
