As a Ugandan working in a foreign country, what's the best way to invest your money back home?

The US dollar is currently pushing towards the Shs4,000 mark. As of Monday, banks were quoting Shs3,985 for buying and Shs4,015 for selling, and the rise is not caused by one factor alone but by several forces colliding. The first factor is huge corporate demand for dollars. Companies in the energy, manufacturing, telecoms and oil sectors need dollars to pay for fuel, raw materials, machinery and other services. Right now, that demand for foreign currency is outpacing the dollars coming into the country. The second factor is expensive oil driven by the Middle East war. Brent crude jumped from around $75 in July to over $105 after a drone strike knocked out a Saudi pipeline. Since Uganda imports almost all its fuel, every spike in global oil prices means more dollars are needed for the same litre, and shipping costs and disrupted routes are making it worse. The third factor is offshore investors selling off. Absa Bank reports that the shilling weakened by 5.34% in September alone and by 12.03% over the past 12 months. US Treasury yields are now near 5%, the highest since 2007, so foreign investors are pulling money out of Ugandan securities to invest in US bonds. The fourth factor is falling dollar inflows. NGO dollars have declined significantly, with the number of NGOs dropping from about 14,000 in 2019 to about 5,000 now following USAID cuts and other donor reductions. Tourism inflows are also soft due to the US travel advisory. The fifth factor is the seasonal import rush. Traders are restocking for December, and the import bill hit $1.612 billion in July 2026, which is up 25.4% year-on-year. The Bank of Uganda has said it has tools to smooth out volatility but will not fight a movement that reflects real supply and demand. In the near term, the shilling is expected to trade within the Shs3,920 to Shs4,000 range, with the risk of further weakening if corporate and offshore demand remains strong.

The most important questions that those robots in parliament should answer right now is: What gap was that law closing? What was the necessity or rather urgency of the law? How many people have been prosecuted as foreign agents under the same law? Of what importance was it?

There is something fundamentally wrong when Ugandans earn in shillings, trade largely in shillings, pay taxes in shillings but are increasingly required to pay rent in US dollars. Why should an ordinary tenant or local business carry the landlord’s foreign-exchange risk? Every time the shilling depreciates, dollar-denominated rent effectively increases overnight, while salaries and business revenues remain largely unchanged. This quietly erodes disposable income, increases operating costs and eventually pushes up the prices of goods and services. This creeping dollarisation of Uganda’s domestic economy deserves serious policy debate. The Uganda shilling is our national currency. If an apartment, office or shop is located in Uganda and generates income from Ugandans, there is a strong economic case for rents to be quoted and settled in shillings. We cannot strengthen confidence in our currency while progressively pricing everyday life in somebody else’s currency. #Uganda #Economy #CostOfLiving #UgandaShilling

"Chairman, a country without reserves is not sovereign. The potential of this Bill to destabilize Uganda’s balance of payments is our primary concern as a central bank. For example, last financial year the overall balance of payment surplus was USD 1.5 billion. That’s how we were able to increase our reserve coverage by USD 1.5 billion. Today as we speak our reserves are close to USD 6 billion. Why? Because these inflows have been coming in. The moment you tamper with these inflows here, we risk running down our reserves, and that is economic disaster for a country.” Governor Atingi-Ego on the Protection of Sovereignty Bill 2026 in an appearance before Parliament today.

HOW DOES STANLEY SCAM PEOPLE? So, Stanley/Sage Buyers has a shop at Acacia Mall, but from what I personally observed, this is not a shop in the conventional sense. I would describe it as a “dummy shop”, a setup that can create confidence in potential customers before they make payments. It's a bait! At the height of the complaints last year, many of the people who reached out to me raised a similar concern that the shop did not actually have gadgets in stock. I decided to visit the shop myself, and I was shocked by what I found. There were only dummy phones on display. The lady I found at the shop then appeared to give me the same explanation that several complainants had described. She told me that I would make a deposit for the phone I wanted, and their shipment would supposedly arrive in two days. 😂 Away from the shop, Stanley has invested heavily in media appearances and advertising, which, in my view, helps create public trust. One day you may see him on @ntvuganda speaking about his alleged connection to Apple, and another day on a different media platform “creating awareness” about scammers in the phone business. Once that trust has been established, the pattern described by several complainants is that he takes orders, sometimes requiring an initial deposit and sometimes full payment, and promises delivery within two or three days. Then the circus begins. Two days become a week. A week becomes several weeks, and weeks become months. When a customer becomes persistent, he proposes a repayment plan. In some cases, according to complainants, he has refunded part of the money, but getting the balance becomes another struggle. In other cases, people say they have not received their money back. I have been told of cases involving him at several police stations in Kampala, and I understand that there are also matters before the courts. He was also recently picked up from a gym around Arena Mall and later released. Then there are the “promotional offers.” Because people naturally love bargains, these offers can be very attractive. For example, a phone worth UGX 5 million may be advertised at UGX 2.5 million, with customers sometimes being required to pay in full. The explanation then becomes that the shipment is on the way, and later, it changes to it has been delayed at URA or somewhere else. For those allowed to pay in installments, by the time the customer completes payment, they are told that the promotional offer has expired. Getting a refund then becomes another battle. There are also people who allege that they received phones that were not what they had ordered, or were fake/non-genuine devices. When they complained, they say they were either ignored or asked to return the phone, only for the refund to become another problem. These are not stories I am presenting without evidence. I have documentation and testimonies relating to the allegations I have outlined above, and I will be publishing the evidence and individual encounters one by one, beginning with the most recent case involving Atweta Sharon. If our police and courts cannot adequately protect people from individuals like Stanley, operating this way, then we shall expose them and warn others before they become victims. This is about accountability and protecting people's hard-earned money.🙌

or why would that fraud be hosted on TV!

Ssempijja Stanley (Sage Buyers) has a new scamming scandal every week. Why people keep going to him and how he gets away with it is still a mystery.

Ever since I made thag post about @Ssempijjastanle and how he has been scamming people. I have so far gotten 8 new complaints in my DM. The next post will be explaining his game in detail

You expose a scammer, someone who defrauds people of their hard-earned money and then a fool comes along saying you’re “fighting a brother.” If we can expose thieves in government who steal from the public, why should we protect one of our own who makes money off people’s tears?

This gentleman, @Ssempijjastanle, through his "phone business", @sagebuyer, has been accused by several people on this platform and elsewhere of scamming them. When I was UOX President, I received four complaints concerning him. I was only able to resolve one of them, and I continued to see several other complaints about him circulating on the timeline. His most recent victim, who reached out to me a few days ago, is a lady called Atweta Sharon. What is particularly concerning is how he handles these situations. He appears calm, accepts responsibility, makes promises to resolve the matter, knowing that he will not honour them, and then the same pattern repeats with another person. In my next post, I will explain in detail the pattern that has been brought to my attention, how his business operates according to the accounts I have received, and how unsuspecting people may have ended up falling victim. We owe the public a duty to identify and expose scams and protect others from falling into the same trap. How can something that leaves so many people complaining become a business model? After laying out the information and evidence available to me, I intend to bring together others who say they have been affected by this gentleman so that we can establish the full picture and explore the appropriate legal and other avenues to put an end to this madness. If you have dealt with @sagebuyer and believe you were defrauded, document everything, receipts, messages, payment records, agreements and any promises made. Do not delete the evidence. 🙌
