@business Translation: Successful Western soft coup.

This statistic stunned me: In the past five years, NATO’s European members and Canada increased their military spending at a higher pace than the six European great powers in the five years preceding World War I. Today, there are more active armed conflicts around the world than at any moment since 1946. All but one are in the Global South, and NATO countries are heavily implicated in all of them. Europe’s rearmament is therefore both a symptom of a renewed assault on the countries of the Global South, and, unmistakably, reflects preparations for a wider global war. That is why the 30 October day of action by Europe’s dockworkers is so vital. It is not only aimed at stopping weapons flows to the Zionist entity. It takes shot at imperialism’s entire military apparatus, which wages war on the global periphery while decimating whatever remains of Europe’s social democratic arrangement. In Europe, these kinds of actions are as rare as they are risky. In Italy, for example, ports are now designated as national security sites — the Italian State Prosecutor recently declared that Italy is part of a “fragmented and hybrid world war” — and strikes can be subject to severe legal penalties. And yet they are urgent. More than 50 years ago, Frantz Fanon asked when the “sleeping beauty” of the European proletariat might rise to the moment and acknowledge that it has often rallied "behind the position of our common masters on colonial issues”. The dockworkers are preparing to break with that long impasse. That is why we are launching a fundraiser to support participating workers and unions ahead of the strike on October 30. Please contribute what you can. If the campaign succeeds, we hope to take it further afield — to all sites where workers can arrest the flows powering NATO’s war machine.

NEW ⛓️‍💥 On 30 October, dockworkers across 40 Mediterranean ports will take coordinated action against militarisation. They refuse to let NATO, the US and the EU turn their ports into outposts for a war economy that devours public resources and visits destruction abroad.

So sick of people arguing about how much of a "choice" MAiD is when being on disability and having to rely on food banks + the 'nutritional supplement' programs via PWD etc. still wasn't enough to keep my now-deceased loved one's BMI high enough to be eligible for a transplant.🙃

One of the things that shocked me when I extended my social circle beyond the social class I was born into is how common it is for people to get jobs before they turn 18. I feel like even liberals should be appalled by the concept of minors being employed. 1/

They will send your son to die for oil. They will call it "freedom." They will put his name on a wall. They will give you a folded flag. They will write a law naming a post office after him in your district. And the person who sent him, the specific person, the one who sat in the meeting where the decision was made, who signed the authorization, who appeared on television that night looking grave and resolute, Will retire to a speaking circuit. Will write a memoir about the difficulty of leadership. Will be called a statesman. Will receive a presidential library. Will die peacefully, at an advanced age, surrounded by family, with his legacy debated in careful, balanced terms by historians who were not in the body bag. There is no accountability at the top. There has never been accountability at the top. The wall with the names on it is not accountability. It is the receipt.

Some remarkable reporting from the Star here: "American-controlled multinational corporations have dominated the most lucrative federal contracts under Carney’s leadership, a Toronto Star analysis of government data shows. The share of government contract dollars going to U.S. companies also increased."
