Happy Friday to all the reply guys saying how renewables are a terrible idea. I hate to break it to you but >80% of new generation capacity built is now renewable energy, mainly solar and wind. See the trend? Coal (black) and fossil gas (grey) getting squeezed more and more.

One thing I think is underdiscussed is the degree to which the proposals for new gas are essentially a Southeast, monopoly phenomenon. Would be interesting to disaggregate why (geography, regulatory framework, state policy, etc.). Are new data centers disproportionately in SE?

The @EPA finalized rules today to limit the pollution from power plants that drives climate change. npr.org/2024/04/25/123… New rules will require existing coal plants to capture 90% of their CO2 emissions by 2032 or retire before 2039. New gas plants also face emissions limits.

You'd imagine a regulation as significant as EPA's new power plant rules would encourage a reset. But the only indication we have from Duke yet is opposite: double down further on gas. We'll see if they sustain this in weeks & months ahead - and how regulators respond. (7/7)

Today the Biden administration announced its intent to "mobilize public and private sector leaders to expand the capacity of the existing U.S. transmission network, setting an ambition to upgrade 100,000 miles of transmission lines over the next five years." Hell yeah.

Context: Duke Energy is currently proposing more large new "baseload" gas plants than any known US utility, at nearly 7 gigawatts, which they're hoping to run far above 40% capacity factor threshold for such plants in EPA's new rule, at least into late 2030s. (2/7)
