"Electricity comes from gas generators" Where does the gas come from? (hint: if you want gas on demand, you need to store it somewhere)
You could also divide emissions by anything. The banana identity: Emissions = emissions/banana Gotta cut those bananas down to size. Decompose the problem correctly - there is an actual sociotechnoeconomic path (fun word!) to solve the emissions issue!
I am a big hater of the "Kaya identity" which decomposes emission based on population and GDP. Some people say "reduce population" Others say "reduce GDP" Or you could just like focus on the technology pieces? If emissions/energy = 0, we win.
Case in point!!! H/t @kaleekreider

Join me as I totally re-route this thread into the realm of socio-ecological theory and the need to embed climate transition into broader movements of democratization and human rights/justice... Short 🧵
Folks don't recognize what they are buying when they buy a heat pump. You are mainly buying warehousing, trade labour, and for downtime necessary to have capacity to respond to emergency calls. Heat pumps are cheap, people are expensive. This is not about the cost of materials.

Roger Pielke is beginning to understand that policy is designed to influence the future, and therefore the creation of baselines is inherently circular. It's a problem akin to nature vs nuture. He still thinks this is a methodological error, but he's starting to figure it out.

But it will only take 15-25 years to turn over the heating equipment. Other than some basic air sealing, the rest is useful but not a prerequisite for decarbonization. Plenty of challenges, let's not overstate the need for everyone to renovate their home.

climate advocates are sharing a story about this plant's "failure to capture 90% of emissions" what's missing? 1) EPA permits are just for~1/4 of its emissions 2) emissions high b/c there's a 335MW coal plant on site; the current CO2 capture is on the ethanol fermentation part
We expect fictional stories to be internally consistent since if a story is not, it is hard to suspend our disbelief and get value out of it. We expect the same of our mitigation "stories" (i.e. scenarios), since then it is easier to imagine making them a reality.

When you hate CCS and CDR so much you want to dismiss the possibility of ever achieving ambitious climate targets.

@HarrisBerton @rishpardikar @Peters_Glen @NB_pik I need a meme here. Why is CCS too damn high?? Because we assumed rapid global climate action!! Why did you assume global climate action too damn rapid?? Because you guys agreed on 1.5C!! Why did we agree on a temperature too damn low?? Because 2.0C seemed to easy!!
The primary value of modelling is not accuracy, clairvoyance, or even technical insight - it's finding an internally consistent solution set. Don't like part of the solution set? That's cool- demonstrate why your approach is still internally consistent. Need modelling for that.

Sure, both are important. But if you have only 100 units of consistency available. I’d probably go 80:20 on internal consistency vs external. More fundamentally, I would NOT publish anything that’s internally inconsistent. No matter how well they match the “reality” 2/
This is actually quite an important question: As IAM modelers, what’s more important? Internal consistency or external consistency? 1/

Loving all the comments assuming because I didn't specifically mention nuclear/cars/forests/coral reefs/cows/steaks in the original character limit that I'm somehow against them having a role to play 😆
Do not expect to see triple junction PV cells in the market anytime sooner. Do expect average PV cell efficiency to improve every year for a long, long time.

@HarrisBerton Good call I didn't see this. Way more complex of a system but I agree cost is everything. Seems like a futile task to me calculating real costs in a renewable system
@PendulumFlow Load has daily variance, even in winter. Batteries help with that. Batteries don't store energy for a week long cold snap. That's what geologic gas storage is for.
@BooshCarron @HarrisBerton Yah no doubt it's pretty difficult and even formulating it in an optimization framework might be intractable too
@xiaowang1984 @HarrisBerton Part of the problem is that its challenging to know exactly how to adjust transmission the more further you go down line ratings and the farther you go into the future you get and those assumptions have huge impacts on the results
@HarrisBerton Yeah I think you could work within the models to fix it so I don't disagree with you there. I'd like to see iteration with more low level sim tools to inform the higher level ones
@AndreasenJack @HarrisBerton @sfjsynfuels and then you say....🤓 "we agree, that's why we support a Carbon Takeback Obligation for producers; they need to pay for and ramp up storage"
Energy Twitter Do refrigerators and grain silos make food cheaper or more expensive? Does geologic storage make natural gas cheaper or more expensive? Do batteries make electricity cheaper or more expensive?
@Peters_Glen @HarrisBerton That's fair. One just needs to be aware that one's statements, regardless of how nuanced they might be, can and often are interpreted in binary terms ("pro" or "anti"). FWIW, those radically skeptical of CCS will see their bias confirmed here regardless of your (non)endorsement.
@HarrisBerton I agree with you broadly on the spirit of that point. Nevertheless the all in system costs for the TX and storage piece are likely to be very significant
@HarrisBerton @MargrietKuijper @sfjsynfuels Totally agree, and then coming from that, you could explain that CCS has been under-deployed due to lack of incentives, not technical merit. And the response is, giving more money to oil and gas? No thanks.
@antunes_morgado @HarrisBerton I am not sure people have fully internalised the extent to what CCS is used in many scenarios, and the implications of that.
@antunes_morgado @HarrisBerton Yes, fair point(s). I happen to fall on the side that CCS is overused in scenarios, & there is little effort to resolve / understand that (IMHO). Yes, that overshadows saying CCS is 'needed', but such is my conscience! This still disturbs me (from 2014) link.springer.com/article/10.100…
@AndreasenJack @sfjsynfuels I understand mistrust and dislike of OG companies. What I don't understand is that they seem to be blind to the fact that opposing CCS implicitly means supporting continued use of FF with CO2 dumping (for as long as we need them). Nice for big oil; less nice for the world.
@Peters_Glen @HarrisBerton We all have finite time to broadcast our opinions. What we say not only signals that we think is true, but also that it is more relevant than what we omit. Making a point about CCS having disappointed rather than why given it's still needed, signals the latter isn't as relevant.
@Peters_Glen @HarrisBerton Logically, 100%. Unfortunately that isn't the way human discourse in general and journalism/politics in particular work. Propositions like "CCS has performed below expectations" work as mental blockers for normative clauses as "CCS has to play an important role in some sectors".
@HarrisBerton If one critiques CCS (or CDR), then advocates often think they are against CCS. I think it is fine to say that CCS has to play an important role in some sectors, while also saying that CCS has performed below expectations. By saying the latter does not imply anti-CCS, in my view.
Fine to critique an incorrect article, but I must admit I don't get the reason to polarise by pinning this on "climate advocates". I would assume Holly is a climate advocate? Those that support CCS would presumably be climate advocates by definition, or?
climate advocates are sharing a story about this plant's "failure to capture 90% of emissions" what's missing? 1) EPA permits are just for~1/4 of its emissions 2) emissions high b/c there's a 335MW coal plant on site; the current CO2 capture is on the ethanol fermentation part
"Electricity comes from gas generators" Where does the gas come from? (hint: if you want gas on demand, you need to store it somewhere)
@Dirtdragonmom My favorite bird is the chickadee, I grew up in the frozen north and they were some of the only birds that stuck out the winter
