Public safety is a group effort, between police, fire, paramedics, mental health agencies, and social services. Police are the only ones who respond to all of these calls.
The most obvious path to success in law enforcement: bridge the gap between community priorities and officer activities.
If your budget doesn’t prioritize the equipment, vehicles, and resources patrol officers need to do their job, you’re wrong.
Patrol needs to be every law enforcement agency’s first priority. Only when patrol is fully operational should adjacent initiatives become a focus.
Law enforcement agencies do not control the narrative around the work they do, because they don’t have data/information to support it. As such, media narratives dominate by default.
It is possible for institutions to increase visibility without improving public understanding of effectiveness.
Enforcement activity that lacks visible public rationale or measurable outcomes is perceived as selective, biased, or self-directed.
Modern public safety systems divide responsibility across disconnected institutions while relying on police as the default response mechanism.
The public evaluates legitimacy of police agencies primarily through responsiveness; in other words, people trust the system that shows up.
