TWO YEARS AGO, THIS WAS ME. A staunch Muslim. Praying towards Mecca. Preaching Islam. Calling others to embrace it. I even memorised verses of the Quran in Arabic, a language I did not grow up speaking, because I wanted to be a good example of the faith I had embraced. I was sincere. I believed I was walking the right path. Today, I look back with difficult questions. How do I reconcile the mercy I believe God represents with reports of people being executed for sexual conduct? How do I reconcile the teaching that all Muslims are equal before Allah with a society where nationality, ancestry and religious status can determine how people are treated? Why should being born an Arab, in the land where Prophet Muhammad lived and was buried, give anyone greater spiritual standing than another human being? If we are all equal before God, why should ancestry make anyone more equal than another? I have seen Christians appeal to the story of Jesus showing mercy to a woman accused of adultery. That story made me reflect deeply on justice, forgiveness and the danger of human beings appointing themselves as God's executioners. I am not claiming that every Christian practises mercy or that every Muslim supports harsh punishment. People within every faith are different. My questions are about the systems, interpretations and authorities that justify cruelty in the name of Allah. I once defended a faith I now question. I once called others to follow a path I have since chosen to leave. I have not abandoned my belief in God. I still believe in God's oneness, holiness and ultimate judgement. What I can no longer do is silence my conscience to protect a religious identity. I want peace. I want love. I want humility. I want a world where nobody considers themselves superior because of their tribe, race, nationality or religious background. I would rather stand before God with honest questions than live among human beings who demand unquestioning obedience in His name. My journey has changed. My conscience is still mine. And I will respect every human being, whether Muslim, Christian, atheist or someone who worships differently from me. No human being owns God. No human being has the right to claim greater human worth because of where they were born. Human dignity must never be sacrificed at the altar of religious authority.

No Muslim should use Islam to justify abusing his wife. You can't claim to fear Allah and make your wife fear you. She's your partner. Not your punching bag. Islam is not an excuse for abuse. Never was. Never will be.

Muslims, let's stop lying to ourselves. Most Muslim countries are not tolerant of other religions. In Saudi Arabia, a Christian can't build a single church. In Pakistan, mobs burned more than 20 churches in one day in Jaranwala over a blasphemy rumour. In Iran, Baha'is are barred from university just for what they believe. Meanwhile the UK has nearly 2,000 mosques, and nobody is burning them down. We demand tolerance everywhere we're the minority. Then refuse to give it everywhere we're the majority. That's not faith. That's hypocrisy.

Before 2020, I was always leaving the house every day of the week to work. Sometimes, I would return home at 8 or 9pm. Once I enter the house, my wife would welcome me. On the TV, she would be watching one movie or series. Then she will change the channel to CNN or BBC for me and ask me to go shower and have dinner. "This is what you stay at home all day to do. Watch Telemundo or Zee world. You stay at home all day doing nothing. I go out every day to earn money to provide you for you and these children. Lazy woman!" She won't say anything to me. She'll go to the kitchen and wait for me to shower before dishing out my food. I would notice that her eyes were blurry. In the morning, I would be off by latest 6:30 am. One day, I came back home, and my wife said that she wanted to discuss with me. "Sweetie, I am depressed. I want to go back to work. I feel like I am useless in this marriage and I am not contributing anything to it. Please, help me find a job" I blasted her and told her that I got a job without her, and I used my qualifications to apply, and that she should do same. My wife cried so much that night. Then came covid 19... My office had asked us to start working from home. Monday to Friday, I was home working. My kids were still going to school under strict covid rules. I started studying my wife more. This woman was not resting. I figured that she was only watching those series or shows just to stay awake to welcome me back home. She was busier than I was. She showed me what it meant to have a wife who is a housewife. One day, I could not take it anymore. "Baby, you have been asking me to pay you monthly salary, I think you're right. I will be giving you the money" Covid made me appreciate my lovely wife, more. Despite dating her for 9 years, I still could not see that God had blessed me enormously. Because I was carried away by my female colleagues that were age mates with me and working. And I wanted my wife to "fit in". I was wrong. That was why in 2021, I came here to write that a housewife that is playing her role effectively and efficiently without bringing a dime is not a liability. It took me years into marriage to realize this. My lovely wife is a hard worker. And I have seen and still seeing the results of her hardwork on our lovely children. Our children are so smart and they're high flyers in their schools. Not only that, they are well behaved and very respectful and contented with what they have. All made possible because of my lovely wife. As a man, if you have a wife like mine, please be kind and be patient with her. Yes, she may not be bringing money, but that's not her primary role or responsibility. Your Lovely wife is more valuable to you than the money that you hope to be getting from her. Only if you will open your brain and mind to understand me. End.

Nigerian women are red flags by default. Someone pointed out that “farmer” was being used metaphorically to describe a man who helps you grow and cultivates you, not an actual farmer😭 That said, it doesn’t change my point about how materialism has become so central to the Nigerian dating scene that we’ve lost sight of what actually makes someone a good partner. Everything revolves around money, provision, and finding a man who “spoils” you and It’s genuinely concerning.

The laughter after she said she dated a farmer was tragic. The dating scene in Nigeria is so hellish that people with decent, honest jobs are mocked for having decent, honest jobs🤦🏿‍♀️ This is why crime and moral decadence thrive in our society. You people are still debating what you can do and what you can't do for your partner. I don't know the faith you people are practising or even the values you have. There is a reason love is the personality trait of all human values. We are very religious but very godless. If I love you, I would wrest the moon from the sky for you, if I could. I would give my life for yours if it ever arises. That's the ultimate show of love. But that is also why I cant love just anybody. I can't love someone who is so poor in mind and spirit that all you can think of in relationship is just how to take. I can't love someone who thinks like a thief because she is so poor in mind - why would you be inflating school fees or money for running the home because you want to cash in a little extra? I can't love someone who is not fully invested in the home to give all of herself to it including her finances. I can't love someone who is so low in spirit to value money above the relationship. Money or what money can buy, is the easiest thing to give to someone you actually love. If you find it difficult to do that, you already have a big problem because you'll never be able to make the real sacrifices when they arise. Again, nobody loves by taking. The only proof of love is GIVING. That someone actually have a heart to be unwilling to do somethings for you(a limitation of how far they can go) is already a visible presence of a lack of love. Love does not think of itself or demand its own way. - "I love you, but I'll never buy you a phone if yours is spoilt and you can't afford a new one while I have more than enough to afford it." - "I love you, but my money is my money. Don't put eyes on my money. I'll never submit my money to the wellbeing of the family and never expect me to pay bills or get you stuff. I deserve to be pampered" "I love you but I can never do this for a man/woman." None of this is an example of love. NONE. That you need someone to spell it out, is already a problem. The first character of love is that it is kind. The second is that, it is not selfish. The third is that it is not unjust. Again, I don't know religiosity you people are practising that your love only thinks of yourself while you're claiming to love another. The most important thing every religion or society teaches you is love. Yet, we simply cant get it right because we are a very wicked people. Your values will always reflect in your relationship
