How I turned 14 million dollars and a dream, to 1 million dollars and a life long nightmare.
This is my depressing #Bitcoin story to make you laugh, feel better about a bad situation, or maybe teach you something who knows :/
Title, I’m an idiot
I first found out about Bitcoin in 2015, my dad, now passed, was a software engineer that would talk about it all the time. He said some day in the future Bitcoin will replace the dollar. My dad made good money and put most of his savings into BTC. One day he told me, in the family safe there is a Bitcoin wallet, and some day in the future it contains enough Bitcoin to retire your mother and your future family.
Being 16 at the time it didn’t mean much to me. But over the years I learned a lot about Bitcoin. I watched pretty much all of Andreas Antonopoulos videos that had me convinced Bitcoin was the future. I loved the idea of Bitcoin, it was exciting, even though I didn’t have any meaningful amount. I told all my friends about it, most didn’t know anything about it. Eventually I saved a few thousand dollars and my dad got me a ledger.
I had no idea how much Bitcoin was in the safe and my dad would never say. The only thing he did say was to never spend it until I have a family. Only then spend what I need and continue to save Bitcoin forever.
My dad unexpectedly passed shortly before my 20th birthday and on his will was instructions on how to use the wallet. His will stated he wanted me to split the Bitcoin that was on the wallet with my mother, and to help her manage it. My mom is not technical at all and I been a nerd most of my life, so I had this under control
Around the same time, my mom started getting really depressed. I took care of her and made sure I was always there for her even though I was off to school most days. I miss my dad, and now its just my mother and I. My mother grew up poor and her family was extremely poor. She moved to the states shortly before I was born to give me a better future. Now was the time to open the safe, get that Bitcoin internet money, and start having fun. Money buys happiness after all right?
Well here is when things started going bad. We get home after the will, and I dive straight into the safe. Load up my laptop and log into the wallet. 250 BTC, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I kept doing the conversion to make sure the USD amount was real. We were instantly millionaires sometime in early 2019. All the stress I’ve ever had about money instantly gone, I was picturing my mother and I in a huge home up on the hill with a beautiful view. We were set for life.
I tell my mother the news, and her coming from humble beginnings says she’s glad but doesn’t need anything. She’s hardly excited almost like money means nothing to her. Now at this point I been following Bitcoin pretty closely and I know the 2020 halving is just around the corner so no point in selling yet. So I didn’t sell anything.
A few days later and my mom comes to me to talk about how her mom, my grandma, and her sister, my aunt (recently married) could really use a house back in Argentina. They were having hard times, and she wanted to gift them the majority of her Bitcoin portion, and it blew me away. But that’s my mom, always looking out for others before herself. Months go by as she helps them house hunt and we don’t spend anything as we live pretty humble frugal lives.
Here comes my first mistake. I made the decision to avoid selling her BTC and to figure out a way to get a loan for it as I knew she would be better off holding until after the 2020 halving. I research for a few days and narrowed down what appears to be the least risky lender that takes Bitcoin. I found BlockFi, they seemed to be the best option at the moment. Sent them the BTC, got the loan, and my mom got my grandma and her sister a home. Then the Covid crash happened in 2020. I had to send in a ton more collateral when that margin call came in.
After the Covid crash, avoiding liquidation, prices started flying around October 2020. The Bitcoin loan collateral went up by 6-8x by the first peak, and we were in complete shock. BlockFi held around 120 BTC which was worth about 6-7M, on a 700K loan. Part of that BTC was in earn to generate interest to pay the loans as my mom wasn’t making much at her job. This was my 2nd mistake. Not paying off the loan to get the way over collateralize Bitcoin returned. The thing is, my mother and I aren’t smart with money, we don’t have rich friends, and we couldn’t tell anyone we had over 14M in Bitcoin.
After the first peak in 2020 BTC crashed down to 30K, and I was unfazed, true holders at this point (I call my mom a hodler but she has no idea what it means). The 2nd Bitcoin peak to 69K made Bitcoin feel unstoppable. I never sold any of the Bitcoin and it remained in BlockFi. I felt it in my bones it was going to 100K. Every influencer on YouTube was calling for 100K, I got greedy by not selling a single sat.
Cut to my 3rdmistake. Around January 2022 when Bitcoin had dropped again from 69K to 30K, I knew Bitcoin was strong enough to bounce back, so I won’t sell any to make my own first big purchase. I figured why not borrow again since it worked the first time. But I wanted to be smart about it (I hate myself), so I diversified on the lending company in case anything went wrong at BlockFi. It was between Nexo and Celsius, they seemed like the best at the time. Can you guess which one I chose? Celsius gave me the loan and I bought myself a 70K car, nothing crazy. A month later watching tons of crypto videos on YouTube, I somehow got convinced to earn yield on my remaining BTC by sending it to Celsius. I got shilled by 10 different YouTubers to earn yield and I ate it up. Now all the Bitcoin we have is between BlockFi and Celsius.
Well most of you know what happens shortly after, they both filed for bankruptcy. I knew the risk of having money in an earn account, I assumed it would go to zero if the company goes under. What I didn’t know is that legally binding contracts for loans, means nothing in bankruptcy court. The loan, which has a legit legally binding contracts in both companies, meant nothing to the courts or to the Judges. The lawyers drained the estate for 100s of millions and in both cases, forced me to set off & pay off the loan that was due by liquidating the entire collateral balance at the bottom of the market ($16000 BTC). They didn’t even liquidate just enough for the loan, they liquidated every Bitcoin. They forced me to send in more collateral to avoid liquidation right before Ch11 when the market was tanking. They ignored my emails to pay off my loan while it was happening. The worst part, they didn’t even give me back 100% of the USD at those rock bottom prices, they’re still holding it and estimate only 75% will be returned. Imagine 14M in BTC liquidated at 16-20K and converted to USD, then getting back 50-75% of that value after 24 months. Pennies on the dollar. Both companies forced all creditors to miss the start of the 2023/2024 bull run. The situation could not have been worse, we were robbed every way imaginable.
I been a forced to hold USD and short BTC without any choice. Borrowers from BlockFi and Celsius got 10-20% of their original deposited collateral and I still don’t have USD from BlockFi. Worst of all, they forced us to miss the start of the 2023/2024 bull run – are we suppose to buy back in now at 60-70K a Bitcoin?
How can this story get any worse? You’ve come to the right girl.
Celsius creditors recently got distributions back, borrowers got back about 10-15% of their original collateral. At this point in my life I been struggling with depression for the last 2 years over the mistakes I’ve made trusting these companies. What makes my depression worse is my mom has no idea what I’ve done. She has no idea her millions turned into thousands. She doesn’t know I failed her. To this day I have not told her because I’m praying I can still make it back this bull run. Watching the recent BTC rally over the last few months while I’m forced to wait for a USD check took my depression to an even higher level. The higher the prices go, the riskier it is to buy back in. Missing out on a 4x from 16K-69K for no reason other than legal theft was so brutal.
Now onto mistake number I stopped counting. Me being the consistent idiot that I am took it a step further and registered on an exchange to do futures trading. I have a little experience trading, so why not I said. In my mind, I’m desperate to get back the value that I was forced to miss over the last few months. As you can imagine how someone with little experience trading goes, the Celsius distribution is now gone. Imagine the feeling of being forced out of the market for this long, getting pennies on the dollar back, you’d feel desperate and anxious to try anything and you’re probably going to make mistakes. So that’s exactly what happened. My fault yet again.
No matter what I do, I lose more money. Ever since the companies and lawyers stole the Bitcoin, I’ve been Bitcoin cursed and I have no clue what I’ve done to deserve this amount of bad luck. I’m down to my last million dollars which I know makes me sound bad for saying, but my spirit is so broken it might as well be zero. I’m completely paralyzed by fear and the streak of bad luck I’ve had. My mom has taught me to appreciate all the things I have in my life and be happy for our health and the opportunities we have, but she doesn’t know the mistakes I’ve made. Going from 14M to 1M has shattered all my motivation, my optimism, my eagerness to do something in life. The worst part of this entire story is half of the BTC belonged to my mom. She doesn't know I failed her. If my Dad was still around this would have never happened. He taught me better, not your keys, not your Bitcoin. I failed my dad. Its my fault, and I’m trying my best to stay positive looking at BTC hitting a new ATH when all I’m holding is USD, fear, guilt and depression. What kills me the most inside is knowing my mom is such a good person, lives her full life putting me and others ahead of her – only for me to lose her retirement. She doesn’t have any savings, she has a low paying job, she’s close to 60 – I still can’t believe what I’ve done. She deserves so much more. Giving back to your parents is the most rewarding thing in the world and I can’t do that anymore as well.
As Bitcoin clears a new ATH, I thought it would be a good time to share my story. Please remember you don’t have to hodl 100% of your crypto. Don’t make the same mistakes I made, sell 10-20%, you’re still going to make a lot of money holding 80%. If you have the opportunity to be debt free or to buy yourself or your parents a home, do it. Don’t trust companies to borrow from, lending contracts mean nothing in Ch11. Don’t send companies crypto to earn yield, its not worth the risk. Companies will rob you and the lawyers will finish you off. Hold your crypto closely and keep it safe. Don’t leverage trade without experience. If you’re going to gamble use a small percentage of your total portfolio and don’t go overboard.
As for me, I’ll probably be depressed for a while, but I’m devoting the rest of my life to helping others avoid the same mistakes I’ve made. I gotta stay positive and keep my head up, who knows I might finally break my bad luck streak. I can’t let my mother down, she has sacrificed too much for me.
I recently joined a startup to reduce counterfeit in the ecommerce world, and I’ll be working on their social media side. I started this 2ndtwitter account to blog, practice videos, and to share my story, as I’m still not ready to share it with my family and friends. Hoping to grow my 2nd X account and turn it into an educational page on things to avoid online.
Anyways... I wish everyone a happy new Bitcoin all time high… May you have better luck than I do.
Just promise not to make the same mistakes I made.
I wrote a viral post about turning $14 million in Bitcoin into $1 million.
I ended it by telling everyone not to make the same mistakes.
Then I lost the rest.
I have no crypto left.
Apparently I was better at writing the lesson than learning it.
For anyone who missed the original: my dad left Bitcoin to my mother and me. He believed it could take care of her, and my future family.
After he passed, I borrowed against it, trusted BlockFi and Celsius, and watched the bankruptcies destroy most of what he'd left us.
When I shared that story, I was ashamed, depressed, and convinced I finally understood where I'd gone wrong.
I meant every warning I wrote.
6-12 months later, I was making another version of the same mistake.
This time I told myself I'd do the work.
I spent months reading crypto Twitter. Following traders. Studying markets. Trying to figure out who actually knew what they were talking about.
After everything that had happened, I thought I knew enough to be skeptical.
But I still desperately wanted to make the money back. And when someone sounded confident about how to do that, I wanted to believe them.
That part of me had survived every loss.
I kept leverage around 3x to 5x and somehow treated that as evidence I was being responsible.
"Only 3x."
A very comforting word, only.
It didn't mean I had a profitable strategy. It didn't mean I could afford the loss. It just sounded sensible next to the people using 20x or 50x.
Over time, it felt like the market always found my liquidation level.
I understand why people say the exchanges are hunting them. When it keeps happening to you, it feels personal.
I can't prove an exchange targeted me. What I can say is that I kept putting money I couldn't afford to lose into positions that could force me out.
Being confident it would bounce didn't help once the position was gone.
The money kept shrinking.
And I kept measuring what remained against the $14 million it had once been worth.
In the first story, I said I was down to my "last million."
I understand how that sounded.
A million dollars was still an extraordinary amount of money. It could have provided real security. I know that.
But I was so focused on what had disappeared that I couldn't appreciate what was still there.
I looked at money that could change someone's life and saw a failed version of mine.
That's painful to admit.
It also explains a lot of what happened next.
A normal return felt too small. Rebuilding slowly felt too slow. Every huge winner someone posted made me feel further behind.
I wanted my dad's plan back. I wanted my mother's security back. I wanted to stop feeling guilty.
Making the money back started to feel like the only way I could forgive myself.
That is a terrible amount of pressure to put on a trade.
I also learned that reading crypto Twitter for months doesn't mean you're learning to trade.
You can learn the vocabulary. Recognize the accounts. Understand the narratives. Start feeling like you're part of the conversation.
And still have no reliable reason to expect your next trade will make money.
Someone can genuinely be a good trader and you can still lose money following them.
You see their opinion. You don't see their full position, their hedge, how much they can afford to lose, or what makes them change their mind.
You can copy a ticker. Copying someone's judgment is a lot harder.
Then there are meme coins.
I understand the attraction completely, especially when you're trying to recover from something.
A coin that could double doesn't feel exciting when you've convinced yourself you need a 10x.
You start looking at smaller coins, bigger promises, earlier entries.
The fact that something could go to zero becomes background noise next to the possibility that it could fix everything.
But someone buying before a coin gets attention has a very different opportunity from someone buying because it got attention.
The same post can be an exciting discovery for you and a chance to sell for someone else.
And when liquidity is thin, the number on the screen isn't necessarily an amount everyone can actually cash out.
The chart can look like everyone got rich. That doesn't mean everyone could leave rich.
I don't think every trader is dishonest. I don't think nobody has skill.
I do think I confused other people's confidence with evidence that I should risk my savings.
Looking back, if I was going to stay in crypto, holding spot in assets I understood, with money I could afford to risk, would have suited me far better than trying to trade my way back.
Even then, nothing owes you a recovery.
But I kept adding ways to lose, because the slower path didn't feel good enough.
I called it trying to fix things.
There was still greed in it. Fear too. And guilt. A lot of guilt.
I wish I could tell you the final loss came with some beautiful moment of clarity.
Mostly, it meant I had no crypto left.
No position waiting to recover. No next rally that would put me back where I thought I belonged.
I had to figure out what to do with my life from here.
And this is the part I didn't expect.
I've started building several ventures and useful tools. Things I actually care about. Things that might help someone.
When I had what felt like unlimited money, I had very little urgency to build anything.
Now I have very little savings, but I have reasons to get up that aren't tied to the price of Bitcoin.
Finishing something feels good. Learning something I can use feels good. Making something useful feels good.
Small progress matters to me again.
I wouldn't choose this loss. I wish I still had the money. I wish I'd protected what my dad left us.
But I do feel happier in some ways, which is a strange thing to write after everything I've just told you.
I have more purpose.
I still get the depressing thoughts. I still think about what could have been if I'd simply left the Bitcoin alone.
Some days that hurts more than others.
I'm trying to let those thoughts exist without making another financial decision to escape them.
I'm also trying to appreciate the things my mother always told me mattered. The people in my life. My health. The chance to do something useful with my time.
She understood the value of those things long before I did.
I had lost my sense of what money was for.
It became a score I needed to get back to.
Now I think more about the time it takes to earn it, the choices it gives you, and how much peace there can be in having enough.
I wish I'd understood that while I still had plenty.
If you're reading this while chasing a meme coin or trying to trade your way back from a loss, please ask yourself something I avoided:
If I hadn't already lost money, would I still take this trade?
Or am I asking it to fix how I feel?
You can explain greed perfectly and still act on it.
I published an entire story proving I understood the danger, then went straight back.
So I'm hesitant to say I've learned every lesson now.
I said that last time.
What I can say is that I'm trying to live differently. Build patiently. Appreciate progress. Stop treating every opportunity I missed as something I have to recover.
Crypto may never have been the right place for me. There are other ways to build a future, and I'm finally giving them my attention.
I don't have a financial comeback to announce.
I have work I care about, a clearer sense of what matters, and some optimism again.
For now, that feels like a place to start.
Onward :)

I think it’s fake pro vaccine bs. The story fails to mention there’s several DNA sequencing companies that been doing what he claims to do, for years before him, yet fails to mention them. Look at fidocure and vidium. They require FNA of tumor sample, they run data against existing database of mutations/human synergistic chemo drugs. In the end you get specific off label meds that target the specific mutations of the cancer. There’s no custom vaccine being made imo
@cobie 15 years of being noble in the least noble industry. Never sold out, never swayed. Cobie deserves every bit of it. A true pioneer and the most respected voice in crypto 🙌
@CredibleCrypto very cool I imagine you already looked at this. Can I dm you some patterns I been tracking? Ty credi, if someone new to crypto had stumbled onto you and only you, they would be in good hands. Everyone lucky to have you from everything I see on here
But in my defense that was a 3 hour trade, what about others that were > 12 hours open. If there’s any correlation it just feels like it’s too easy for MM to hunt for followers that just copy trade with more leverage, which ends up screwing up your original position. You have one of the highest public hit rates so there has to be lot of OI that instantly pops up when you post a public trade. Curious what you think if you see this pattern 🤓
