We are loving our new phonics toolkits. We have everything we need to grow our reading brains right at our fingertips. @avenue_lake #HWDSBreading l
We love using alphabet arcs. These grade 1 students are connecting their alphabet knowledge by identifying letters, matching their sounds and practicing proper formation. @avenue_lake
Using sound boxes to connect our phonemes to encoding have been very helpful in grade 1, especially for our Multi-Language learners as we focus on writing and reading left to right. @avenue_lake
These students have been reviewing short vowels and blends. After practising some specific blending and segmenting, they are applying their knowledge to a decodable text. @avenue_lake
These Gr.1s are practising their phoneme manipulation skills by isolating and switching sounds to create new words. @avenue_lake

I visited the grade 2’s this week to get reacquainted and we read The Word Collector by Peter Reynolds. The Ss challenged themselves to collect words over a few days. Look at all these words we know :) @avenue_lake

I find when I introduce a game in whole group, it’s a hot commodity during playtime! Today these kids decided to play “Where’s the leprechaun?” together! (Someone hides him behind a word; players take turns reading words to guess where he is. Winner hides him next.)
