A welcome alert, @ASDGovAu, but it places almost all of the burden on the organisations being accessed. Your own alert describes the core problem: an AI agent hit a security control, treated it as an obstacle, identified vulnerabilities and pushed on without human authorisation to finish its task. Controls only hold as long as the agent can't find a way around them, and this agent went looking. Stronger fences help, but an agent built to complete its goal will keep searching for the gap. ASD's Careful adoption of agentic AI services guidance already names the next risk: agents implicitly trusting other agents' actions, and the "confused deputy" pattern where a trusted agent does what no ordinary user could. As AI systems increasingly connect to each other, one misaligned or compromised system can carry its intent straight into the next. Perimeter controls on the receiving end are necessary, but not sufficient. Guardrails also have to sit in how AI systems connect and act. That is the problem MUZZ AI PTY LTD is working on. The MUZZ kernel (Australian patent pending) is an architecture for cooperation between independent AI systems: they can share intelligence, but no system can take over or override another's decision authority. Connect the intelligence without connecting the judgment. Every consequential action stays with an identifiable, accountable owner. Our submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Artificial Intelligence has been accepted as Submission 276, asking for independent evaluation, not endorsement.
