Physicians are being called upon to direct and supervise antimicrobial stewardship plans and they need to be fully prepared, informed, and trained about all the elements of antibiotic stewardship to achieve optimal clinical patient outcomes related to antibiotic use.
Perhaps the single most important action needed to greatly slow down the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant infections is to change the way antibiotics are used.Selecting the appropriate antibiotics, and administering them in the right way—is known as stewardship.
Many of the advances in medical treatment—joint replacements, organ transplants, and treatment of DM, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis—are dependent on the ability to fight infections with antibiotics. Without effective antibiotics, life-improving medicine will be lost.
Exposure to antibiotics during infancy is associated with elevated body mass index (BMI) and risk of childhood obesity.
Taking an antibiotic when it is not needed can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. Each time someone takes unnecessary antibiotics, they increase their risk of developing an infection that may be resistant to treatment by antibiotics in the future.
AMR occurs as the result of the acquisition, expression, and transfer of resistance genes in pathogens. They acquire resistance genes through natural selection when exposed to antimicrobial pressure.Rapid emergence of resistant pathogens is accelerated by the inappropriate use.
The economic effects of AMR comprise increased length of hospitalization, higher healthcare costs and decreased labor supply and labor efficiency.The global economic cost associated with AMR is estimated to be US$ 100 trillion by 2050 if the current trend persists.

As per WHO, Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in an infant less than 6 mo of age is defined as weight-for-length z-score (WLZ) < −3 or bilateral pitting edema. A significant proportion of newborns in this age range were born prematurely or with intrauterine growth retardation.
