@Truth_inc311 @secularprolife FWIW, this definition and project were designed to avoid these kinds of results. If providers prescribe mife to non-pregnant patients (to treat Cushing Syndrome), this cannot count as an abortion on the proposed definition, so would not be subject to bans.

@ChristinaD9752 @secularprolife Copying from elsewhere: Could be, but I wanted to bracket certain cases. Example: surgeons perform a risky surgery on a fetus, maximizing the chance of survival, yet the fetus dies. The act "secured the death" but wasn't done "without regard for survival." So, not an abortion

@BurtisWilliam @secularprolife The second sentence is correct. In the type of case you mention, I would call the act an "abortion attempt." By comparison, an assassination attempt isn't an assassination (so, my thinking was, an abortion attempt isn't an abortion).

@cladery1 @secularprolife Could be, but I wanted to screen out certain cases. Rough example: surgeons perform a risky surgery on a fetus. This maximizes his chance at survival, but the fetus dies. The act "secured the death" of the fetus but wasn't done "without regard for survival." So, not an abortion

@TomJipping @secularprolife Reasonable take. I didn't opt for that because I want to distinguish abortion from attempted abortion. An act done "for the purpose of securing death" that fails is a mere attempt. (I was thinking, by comparison, that an attempted killing isn't a killing.)
