We don’t have any plan to deal with homelessness, and I really think we need one. Anyways, my angry bedtime rant is done, please tell your elected officials to build more non profit or public housing! And maybe work on a plan to end homelessness.
We just keep lurching from one crisis to another without any plan or guidance about where to go next. We are always surprised by winter arriving or renovictions or front line staff burning out, without realizing that this is a systemic problem and it requires a systemic response.
To be clear, I am not faulting anyone for pointing out how our system is failing people. I am faulting the government who lacks a clear, equitable strategy of who we need to prioritize, and how we go about getting them into housing.
I am glad that people are recognizing that homelessness is a huge issue in our city now, but just because it makes you sad in the moment doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been burning out the dozens or more people who work with these folks every day.
And why should my time tomorrow be monopolized by the people demanding that we do something about this new (to them) tragedy, when there are a dozen other tragedies unfolding that the public doesn’t know about?
one person needs and deserves that hypothetical affordable apartment more than someone else? For instance, take a secretive client in an abusive relationship, who is finally ready to leave their spouse. Do they deserve an apartment less because they don’t know the right people?
And most of the time that means they will be housed. Awesome, right? Except for one thing. Why do we allow reporters and well intentioned, well connected members of the public to play king maker in people’s lives? Everyone deserves a place to live. Why can they say that
