A synopsis:
As a historian of the Gilded Age, I cannot state strongly enough how wonderful Deadwood is in getting into the grossness of the era, and not just the filth either.
Deadwood.
The greatest show about the violent emergence of capitalism and the corruption of American statecraft that I have ever seen. The comments on racism, sexism, and class are also quite powerful. The acting is second to none. Just amazing.
This is why governments are the major funders of scientific research—only govts, societies, have the long time horizon needed.
What private firm would fund the next research on DNA, with treatments coming only decades later?
Science is a public good, and govts fund public goods.
We went from learning DNA is the molecule of heredity (1952) to sequencing a virus, transmitting it across an ocean, and synthesizing a functional vaccine before the virus even made it there in 68 years
There is only tech stagnation if you have a very narrow knowledge of tech
Both popular music and films seem to have been much better in the 60s & 70s (music more the 60s & film the 70s) and I think that has more to do with a confluence of technological, social & market changes than anything related to that generation’s artists’ talents.
Not only was music better when I was young, but it was even better before I was born.
There’s good music in every decade obviously, but thinking every era’s music has equal artistic merit is participation-trophy stuff.
Barr: "Donald Trump is a monster who tried to end democracy and led the first coup attempt in American history. On the other hand, Biden hasn't pushed for upper class tax cuts."
Barr: I think his whole administration is a disaster for the country
Collins: Is worse than subverting the peaceful transfer of power?
Barr: Did he succeed?
Absolutely losing it over this old Slate article that calls a Louisiana voting literacy test from the 60s "impossible"
Spoiler: the issue of its usage aside, the test was not impossible
College students at Columbia and campuses across the city and state are demonstrating moral courage right now.
Meanwhile our disgraced former governor, whose reckless executive actions in 2020 led to the deaths of thousands of elders in nursing homes, smears the students.
In an Op-Ed for the WSJ, former NY governor Andrew Cuomo attacks Columbia protesters, saying “many” are “pro-Hamas & brazenly support a terrorist organization.” He compares the situation on campus to events preceding the Holocaust and refers to Gaza as a “frustrating” situation.
NEW: Trump’s economic advisers are considering ways to actively stop nations from shifting away from using the dollar, sources tell me, @nancook
+ @JenniferJJacobs
Penalties being discussed: export controls, currency manipulation charges and tariffs

Among other things he notes that the growth in Chinese production post-COVID is below trend, but China's trade surplus has nonetheless surged mainly because the growth in Chinese consumption is even further below trend.
The government can make noncompete clauses unenforceable in the same way that 28 states make union contracts requiring all workers to pay a representation fee unenforceable. The government decides what sort of contracts can be enforced.
There are many sources of monopsony power, some of which are endemic to the labor process.
But there are also practices that create monopsony by artifice. Like non-competes. This new rule change banning them could help reduce that harm and raise dynamism. thehill.com/business/46154…
