I moved twice after my wife's first positive pregnancy test. Once to get closer to family & friends. Again because we weren't close enough. The moves were tough - especially the second, which happened during my daughter's first month. But we're not alone... and much happier.

New parents drown when they go it alone. My wife & I built a support network that's made 2 under 2 a breeze. Grandparents take over when we need a break. BBQs & park with young parent friends on warm, sunny days. Local mom group for empathy & community. Build a network.

New parents are vulnerable. The deeply rooted wisdom and support our ancestors relied on - family, community - has been replaced with pop psychology. We've become over reliant on "science-based" parenting fads. The better way: Consider the science, Connect with your roots.

My 19m old puts herself to bed on her own. Yesterday she just got up and went to her room to take a nap (closed the door and everything). Today she asked for a bath and a bottle so she could go to sleep. Any other dads experience this? Hoping it’s not just a phase.

We've been convinced it's normal for a mother and father to raise a family on their own. Realize that extended family, like-minded friends, and community are not luxuries. They're necessities. You should be factoring these things in when family planning with your wife.

My 19m old daughter cooked her own breakfast this morning. I started teaching her how last week. She's learned to break eggs, beat them, pour them into a pan, and today she scrambled them herself. Kids learn so quickly with patient guidance and enthusiastic encouragement.

Embrace your toddler's chaotic and messy help. They want to "do it themselves" because they hunger to contribute. They clumsily "help" because they're beginners. How do you expect them to learn & grow if you don't have the maturity & patience to guide them?

Holding a newborn and realizing you know nothing about parenting is panic inducing. It didn't have to be this way. Present and involved elders used to preserve and pass on parenting wisdom. My promise to my kids - they won't have to start from scratch like I did.

Hunt, Gather, Parent by @FoodieScience is incredible. It's the best parenting book I've read in my brief 2 years as a father. Every suggestion in the book deeply resonated with me. However, I don't think it's enough to just fit these techniques and philosophies to modern life…

The Nuclear Family is bullshit. A mother and father were never meant to raise children in isolation. Parents and kids - especially kids - need extended family and community to thrive.

Cooking & baking with toddlers is a dead simple way to bond with them. Get a Montessori tower, plan for things to take longer, & accept that it'll be 10x as messy. Involve them instead of putting on the same Disney movie for the 100th time. instagram.com/reel/C5QEjBiRT…

My toddler barely touches her toys. Instead, she asks to help me cook, closes kitchen cabinets and the refrigerator door without being told to, cries when she doesn't scoop the dog's food, and constantly asks to go outside. Kids crave responsibility. Give it to them.

"errrm just wait until" is bad parent cope. Your kids are a reflection of you. If they're going through "bad" phases, chances are you're the root cause.

It's impossible to always be 100% present with your kids. Here's a secret - you don't have to be. Your kids don't want your attention all the time, so go ahead & browse your phone when they don't. BUT, be aware of when they DO so you can immediately put it away and focus.
