Caught in the act: Six tiny galaxies already merging into a future giant, just 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang Astronomers have spotted a remarkably compact group of six young galaxies only 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang. This tiny cosmic construction site may offer a rare, real-time glimpse of how some of the universe’s largest galaxies first came together. According to the standard picture of cosmic evolution, big galaxies grow hierarchically—piece by piece—through repeated mergers of smaller ones. Dense regions in the early universe act as natural laboratories for watching this process unfold. The newly studied system, known as SCGG-z5, sits at redshift z = 4.97 and consists of six spectroscopically confirmed galaxies packed into a region only about 52,000 light-years across—roughly half the diameter of the Milky Way. Deep imaging and spectroscopy from the James Webb Space Telescope revealed that the galaxies are already interacting vigorously. All six show disturbed, irregular shapes consistent with ongoing gravitational tugs and possible mergers. Star-formation rates vary: three members are forming stars at or above the typical rate for their era, while one is especially prolific. Gas appears to be flowing inward in some galaxies, hinting at inside-out growth, yet the most massive member shows the opposite pattern—quieter in the center and more active on the outskirts. The group is dynamically unsettled. The galaxies move relative to one another fast enough that they could complete multiple close encounters within roughly 14 million years. Simulations of similar compact groups suggest the six will fully merge into a single system by redshift z ≈ 3–4, only about 400 million years after the moment we observe them. The resulting galaxy is expected to continue growing, potentially reaching a stellar mass of 100 billion suns by z ≈ 1 and becoming the bright central galaxy of a future cluster. From the start of star formation to final coalescence, the entire assembly process may span only about 800 million years. SCGG-z5 has been caught mid-journey—an early cosmic moment when a future massive galaxy is still being built from its separate pieces. This compact proto-group provides direct observational evidence of early hierarchical assembly in the universe’s first billion years, showing how the environment already begins to shape the different evolutionary paths of its members long before they fully unite.
