Why should we support Ukraine?
The answer is simple.
What defines “Western civilization”?
Most clowns whining about its death while promising to save it by closing borders couldn’t answer. Marco Rubio, that sad jug-eared gnome who sold his soul for oversized shoes, at least remembers some “smart” names: Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, Cortés.
Seriously? That’s basically Genghis Khan, Attila, Ivan the Terrible, Putin and maybe Prigozhin, just with better PR.
The West’s genuinely distinctive invention was something else: limiting power. Rights independent of a ruler’s whim. Law that applies to strong and weak alike. Democracy, free speech, independent courts, political competition, equality before the law.
Ukraine chose that model. That makes “why help Ukraine?” almost self-answering.
Because we should want freedom to expand and tyranny to shrink.
And because the West, at its best, is universalist.
Not “rights of Englishmen,” “rights of Christians” or “rights of our tribe.”
Human rights.
Not because someone is ours, useful, the right religion, sex or color. Because they are human.
Without that idea, there is no particular reason to defend Ukraine. Russia is bigger, stronger, nuclear-armed and can offer deals, oil, gas and “stability.” Crude “realism” says: cut a deal with Moscow, redraw the map, let the stronger side keep whatever it bit off.
Universalism says: no.
A right does not stop being a right because its holder is weaker, farther away or foreign. If Poland may choose its alliances, so may Ukraine. If France cannot be carved up because its neighbor is stronger, neither can Ukraine.
The rules protecting you must protect somebody else too.
Otherwise they are not rights. They are privileges.
Strip that away and we are back in the old pigsty of great-power politics: big states sit at the table, small ones wait outside, then some gentleman with a folder comes out and says, “We’ve decided your future.”
Ukraine is the weaker party that refused to know its place.
It was supposed to lose in three days, accept Russia’s superiority and Moscow’s supposed special rights.
It refused.
That is the liberal principle in miniature:
the smaller does not owe obedience to the larger.
Authoritarian minds hate that idea because it works everywhere. An employee may tell the boss no. A citizen may tell the president no. A woman may tell her husband no. A minority may tell the majority no.
Power does not create the right to command.
That is why hostility to Ukraine fits so neatly beside hostility to feminism and minorities, nostalgia for “strong leaders,” contempt for international law and near-erotic admiration for empires.
Different floors of the same building. Same sign on every door:
KNOW YOUR PLACE.
That is why Trump and Trump-like politicians cannot restore Western greatness. They misunderstand what made the West worth defending.
Those screaming loudest about the “death of Western civilization” are miserable little shopkeepers: petty, greedy, insecure, unable to think farther than next Friday. Political hamsters stuffing both cheeks, crawling into their burrows and declaring victory.
Le Pen, AfD, Farage, Konfederacja and the smaller lice around them are pathetic.
They resemble people wintering inside a cathedral who smash the stained glass, burn the carved doors and library books for warmth, then congratulate themselves because it’s cozy and the sausage is sizzling.
That is how they look at Europe too: the common market, freedom of movement, peace, law, universities, science, culture, institutions built over generations.
Not as a civilization.
As a pile of firewood.
And while tearing their own house apart for heat, they call themselves its defenders.
They are not defending Western civilization.
They are dismantling it.
Russian actor, Nikita Kukushkin recorded this anti-war spot, and it really hits you 😢
English translation: “I am war. Help me kill. All you have to do is nothing. Don’t protest. Don’t talk about me. Don’t follow the news. Don’t help the people who have lost their homes. Don’t support the people defending themselves. Say everyone’s to blame. Everyone except the czar. Have a latte at Patriarch’s Ponds. Go to VK Fest. Keep living as though buildings aren’t burning, people aren’t dying, lives aren’t being destroyed around you. Do me a favor: Don’t even think about me. I am war. Help me kill.”
I wanted to use Trump's threat to levy 50% tariffs on Canada and Canada's in-his-face response to discuss the underlying behavioral reasons for Trump being so fixated on tariffs.
Trump has no strategy or depth. He has cravings. And two of the cornerstone cravings for Trump, especially now that he's playing out his final chapter on Earth, are greed and grandiosity. These two things, which interrelate, underly almost everything - he is a giant id.
He wants awards, he wants things named after him, he wants oil from this country and a piece of this company and $10B here and billions more there, and all of that is but a subset of what he really wants, which is the knowledge, belief, and portrayal that he can do whatever the f*ck he wants - the ultimate grandiosity.
The legacy media always tries to understand Trump's stubborn fixations by normalizing him and asking: "What's he thinking?" Allow me AGAIN: Trump doesn't think; HE FEELS. He lusts. He craves.
And he likes how tariffs make him feel, because he can be a bully, impose his will, make and remove threats, and cause countries to do his bidding and pay him tribute arbitrarily. THEY FUEL HIS GRANDIOSITY.
How much more American consumers, businesses, and importers pay, is immaterial. None of that matters to Trump. Prices don't matter. Inflation doesn't matter. People don't matter. America doesn't matter.
Bullying, imposing his will, being the center of attention, and threatening others, is the essence of what a malignant narcissist does. Carney knows that and realizes that this is where America is at present.
It's like America didn't even elect a person. It elected a thing, a parasite, a pathology.
A crater the size of an entire courtyard.
This is what Russia’s missile did to a residential neighborhood in Kyiv.
Russia is killing civilians, destroying homes, families.
This is terror!
💔 52,500 people, including nearly 4,500 children, took shelter in Kyiv’s metro during Russia’s overnight attack.
This was the highest number of people seeking refuge in the metro during a night-time air raid in recent years.
One of the Ukrainian Red Cross’s key logistics hubs in Kyiv was damaged during Russia’s attack.
The strike destroyed 320,000 humanitarian aid items and essential equipment worth more than UAH 79 million.
These were supplies meant to help people.
Russia destroyed them instead.

BREAKING!
A Message Between the Lines: Europe Signals It Has More Than One Intercept
Subtitle: When OpSec Fails, Allies Start Talking
A European intelligence service reportedly intercepted a call between Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov and U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff regarding negotiations over the war in Ukraine. The service then passed details of that call to journalists. That alone deserves attention.
On the surface, the content that has been made public is relatively mild. It confirms that conversations occurred and shows Moscow shaping its messaging around them. There is nothing explosive in what was released. And that is exactly why the release raises questions.
High level SIGINT involving a Russian presidential adviser and an American presidential envoy is not the sort of thing that normally appears in the press. Intercepts at that level are usually held under some of the tightest compartmentalization in the intelligence system. A service does not casually hand that material to reporters. If they make that choice, they make it with purpose.
One possibility is that the intercept itself is not the point. The release may have been the message.
If a European service wanted to send a quiet but unmistakable signal to the White House, this is how it would happen. A small and relatively harmless portion of what they captured is made public to demonstrate capability and access. It also hints that the real material, the parts they did not share, remains secured in their vault.
That creates immediate pressure on the U.S. envoy involved. If Witkoff saw his own call appear in the European press, the first rational question he would ask himself is: “What else do they have?” That question alone can change behavior. It can tighten discipline. It can force recalibration. And it can remind the administration that any off book diplomacy conducted outside allied visibility is, in fact, visible to at least one ally.
This is not assertion. It is a reasonable OSINT hypothesis based on standard intelligence signaling behavior. When a service wants to convey that they are watching and that they know more, they do not need to leak the damaging material. A small sample is enough.
The timing matters. The leak arrives as multiple outlets report tension inside the U.S. government over the 28 point plan, with Rubio sidelined, European partners blindsided, and Witkoff allegedly operating a shadow channel. If a European service believes those backchannels pose risks to European security, signaling their ability to monitor them is a strategic act.
So while the intercept itself is notable, the more important story may be the intent behind its release. Someone wanted the White House to understand that the Miami line of communication is not private, not deniable, and not beyond allied awareness.
In other words, the leak may not have been about the conversation. It may have been about the warning.

@AndrewPerpetua To be honest Andrew, some days the only reason I log into this outhouse is to see what's been poked and fallen out of your brain onto the page. So thanks for that
I recently stood in a Ukrainian field as the sunflowers began to fade - petals curling, golden faces heavy and bowed.
The first time I saw this, I thought it meant they were dying.
But I’ve learned it means they’re ready - their seeds full, hardened by sun, rain, and wind, prepared for the harvest.
It reminds me of the spirit of Ukraine.
From the outside, some might mistake weariness for weakness. They see bowed heads and think defeat. But that weight is not surrender - it’s the burden of endurance. It’s the proof of many seasons survived in the face of relentless assault.
Like those sunflowers, Ukraine has stood through the storms of Russian aggression - battered, scarred, yet ripening with resolve.
This is what resilience looks like.
Not unmarked, but unbroken.
Ready for what comes next.
Vance is the looming threat because of this lack of moral base and his transparent will to power. Trump has his brownshirts, but he's a fading and cowardly old narcissist. It takes a Vance who will do anything for power to create the blackshirts that come in the final phase.
Elon Musk wants his Empire on Mars. The reason he wants to shut down USAid is that he wants tax payer money to fund and build his empire there. I know that sounds insane, and it is. The one thing Elon pressed upon me when I first met him was that he was going to go to Mars and set up a civilization there. He stopped being a humanitarian and “good guy” when he realized there was no way to get there without cleaning out government coffers, and there was no way to do that without stopping humanitarian aid here in the USA and abroad. Keep your eye on the ball. When Elon slashes costs, it’s for his own pocket and no one else’s. It’s stealing, is what it is. He sees those trillions as his. Not ours. He thinks he is “saving humanity” by going to Mars. He is clearly ending humanity and humanitarian aid to get there. We are Elon’s stepping stone. Be aware. He is already rich off government contracts. Now he is gaming the system. Trump has become his lapdog. Watch all the things Trump gives Elon now. Elon has seized him.
