The Ministry of Justice has confirmed a fee increase for housing and immigration legal aid work. Although these first steps go in the right direction, do they really meet the scale of reform needed? PLP researcher @JoeESummers for @lawsocgazette: lawgazette.co.uk/commentary-and…
@sillyoldjen @publiclawprojct @SydneyLawSchool @FAccTConference @alexandrasinc10 More detail here: publiclawproject.org.uk/content/upload…
@sillyoldjen @publiclawprojct @SydneyLawSchool @FAccTConference @alexandrasinc10 It’s not - the GDPR contains a right not to be subject to solely ADM, but has exemptions and doesn’t apply where there’s been a ‘human in the loop.’ And the Data (Use and Access) Act, just passed, changes that so the prohibition only applies to ADM using special category data.

"The Data (Use and Access) Bill – is set to quietly water down the imperfect backstop regulation that has, until now, limited the decisions which can be fully automated." PLP's Joseph Summers on why we need a new public law for the automated state 🤖⚖️ civilserviceworld.com/news/article/f…

Breaking: We are delighted to share that our client @EllenClifford1 has won her case against the DWP over an unlawful consultation held on reforms tightening the #WorkCapabilityAssessment. These reforms would lead to over 400,000 people being worse off by at least £416 a month.
When it comes to immigration legal aid, are there new depths to the ocean of unmet need? Has the Legal Aid Agency's list of providers who can give immigration advice remotely actually created a mirage of capacity? In case you missed PLP's new report: publiclawproject.org.uk/resources/immi…
The historic fee increase for immigration legal aid could not have come at a more vital time. PLP's new analysis of potential provider capacity has revealed shocking new depths of unmet need in south-west England 👇 publiclawproject.org.uk/resources/immi…
If true, this would be a welcome investment. It would help some of the most marginalised people in our society & provide a much-needed boost to a key public service that has been neglected for too long. (As a reminder, civil legal aid fees haven't been increased since 1996!)

“Remote advice is not a safe harbour in an ocean of unmet need,” said Dr. Jo Hynes. Find out why we think the Ministry of Justice urgently needs to conduct more research & establish best practice guidelines ⬇️ With thanks to @NatalieByrom, @AsylumAid, @HelenBamber and A&M

New report I worked on at @publiclawprojct reveals Universal Credit deductions cause significant harm and are applied in an opaque and arbitrary way. Obtaining information about deductions, accessing hardship measures & seeking legal remedies is often a bureaucratic nightmare.🧵
The DWP are imposing deductions that push people into destitution, evictions, and poor mental & physical health, according to PLP’s new report. Here’s why we’re calling for reforms that would stop dodgy debt collection and create a fairer system 🧵 publiclawproject.org.uk/resources/from…
