Where in the Australian Constitution does it say that election debates must be restricted to Labor and the Liberals? And where in Victoria’s Constitution Act or Electoral Act does it say One Nation cannot be included? The government and the Opposition have established roles in our parliamentary system, but that does not give them exclusive ownership of political debate. There is no general constitutional rule requiring Victorian election leaders’ debates to be limited to those two parties. Nor does the Constitution automatically give every party a right to participate. So if the argument is that only Labor and the Liberals should debate because one is the government and the other is the Opposition, where is that written into law? If One Nation meets the requirements to contest the election, voters should be able to hear its policies, question its leader and decide for themselves. Labor and the Liberals should be confident enough to defend their policies against competing arguments, not rely on a two-party format to determine which political voices voters get to hear. Democracy means allowing voters to judge the alternatives for themselves. The question is simple: are these exclusion rules written into law, or are they political decisions made by the parties themselves?
