Before You Apply Thursday: Shopping for an auto loan or mortgage? Most scoring models treat several inquiries for the same loan type in a short window as one, often 14 to 45 days depending on the model. Credit card applications don't get that break. Each one counts.

Report Check Tuesday: Check the credit limit listed on each of your cards. If a card shows no limit, or a lower limit than you actually have, your utilization can look higher than it really is. A wrong limit is worth disputing or asking the issuer to fix.

Credit Myth Monday: "I paid the collection, so it should disappear from my credit report." Not automatically. Paying can update the status to paid, but the record can stay. Removal isn’t guaranteed just because you paid — accuracy and aging are different questions.

Jokes aside: most negative items age from the date of first delinquency (or the similar start date on the line), not from the day you finally paid. Paying can update the balance and status. It does not restart or erase the aging clock by itself. Read the dates on the trade line.

Credit Myth Monday: "If I settle a debt, it disappears from my credit report." Not quite. Settling can update the account to settled or paid, but the history can stay. Before you settle, ask how it will be reported and get the terms in writing.

Credit Myth Monday: "A charge-off means the debt is gone — I don't owe it anymore." Not quite. Charge-off is an accounting status on the creditor's side. The balance can still be owed, sold, or collected. Check the status, the balance, and whether it shows on all three bureaus.

@Cakes6G Usually it's how balances reported. If every card shows $0 on the statement date, some scoring models read that as no recent use and dip a few points. Let one card report a small balance, then pay it in full. Paying them off wasn't the mistake.

@ksoos_hussy You did the right thing. That dip usually comes from the loan closing (one less open account in your mix), not a penalty for paying it off. The on-time history stays on your report, and scores often settle back as your other accounts keep reporting on time.

@DreamFactory4T Useful split. One add-on people miss: for mortgages/auto, FICO often treats same-type hard pulls within a short window as rate shopping (counts closer to one hit). Spreading card apps over months doesn’t get that same break.

@Mis_Nim Annoying, but it’s usually not “punishing” you for paying debt. Common culprits: the card got closed (available credit + age take a hit), a limit got cut, or something else reported the same week. Paying it off and keeping the card open is still the healthier move long-term.
