To the federalists demanding @ABDanielleSmith “put the sovereigntists in their place”: Be careful. Our place is inside the @Alberta_UCP. Organizing. Voting. Contesting nominations. Electing constituency boards. Choosing the leadership. You keep talking about us as though we wandered into somebody else’s party. Janet Brown’s polling found 53% of UCP supporters backed proceeding toward a binding Independence referendum. A majority of the party’s supporters, and your response is to demand that we sit down, shut up and accept instructions from the people we disagree with. What an extraordinary understanding of grassroots democracy. Apparently, our convictions are respectable enough when you need our votes. Our anger is legitimate when you need volunteers. Our demands deserve a hearing when somebody needs to win a leadership race. Then the election ends, the offices are allocated, and suddenly we are an embarrassment that must be managed. That arrangement is finished. A province-wide referendum does not give federalists permanent ownership of the UCP. It does not settle who should lead the party, what its members should advocate, or which candidates its constituency associations should nominate. Those questions belong to the people prepared to show up and decide them. And we intend to show up. Federalists are welcome in an Alberta First party. They are welcome to argue their case, seek support and participate in its democratic life. But welcome does not mean entitled to command. It does not mean a permanent veto over the ambitions of sovereigntists. And it certainly does not mean the right to demand our political submission as the price of membership. If you want to lead, win the argument. Win the nominations. Win the confidence of the membership. Stop asking the premier to discipline the people you cannot persuade. The UCP cannot casually discard the Independence movement and expect its electoral coalition to survive intact. You cannot spend years courting these voters, build your government with their support, then treat their departure as inconsequential. Who replaces them? Who does the work? Who delivers the seats you have grown accustomed to counting before the campaign even begins? You have mistaken loyalty for captivity. We are no longer accepting the role of reliable voters whose only permitted ambition is keeping somebody else in office. We want an Alberta First party. We intend to organize for one, constituency by constituency, nomination by nomination, leadership vote by leadership vote. So keep telling sovereigntists to “know their place.” We do. Now we intend to exercise every right that comes with it.
