A framing that's working for myself and training others for explaining/checking for understanding is thinking about making "oral bullet points."
1. Explain "The (scientific) model we will be making uses pictures and words to show what we did and what happened in our experiment"
Sketch and Tell is my go-to dual coding strategy. We use it daily when learning new information. During retrieval practice and exams, it’s clear which information students dual coded and which they didn’t. Their memory traces are so much stronger when both channels are engaged.
@SciInTheMaking Love seeing this in action,l. We’re building consistency with EDI engagement norms across classrooms, and your example shows exactly why. Starting with think time + choral response sets the tone for full participation. Every step we take together strengthens our shared culture of…
Doesn't matter that I teach AP students. Generally speaking, they don't know how to study.
Today, we're going back to the basics of flashcards. So powerful for learning when done correctly.
Don't make learning more complicated than it need be. Don't muddy the waters of limited…
@SciInTheMaking@chris_mukiibi That was really awesome to watch! It is amazing what a mix of good pacing, brief tactical wait times, and paired responding can have to support high rates of responding at the class level. Great demonstration of high quantity teacher led instruction!

Helps that phones are banned too.
@SciInTheMaking This is a fantastic use of choral response! Short reading followed by a chance for students to recall and rehearse key ideas from the text. Front loaded the means of participation and made sure everyone was responding on cue. Keeps students from checking out and gives them an…
Go into this year thinking:
It isn't necessarily how much students cover. It's about how much students can remember.
If students can not remember what you taught them 2 weeks ago, they never learned it; they were only taught it.
Learning is a change in long-term memory.
@SciInTheMaking After I saw @Mr_Raichura 's video, I tried out many of the techniques when I had to sub in a 6th grade class and it was amazing. Absolutely you can do this in the US!
Awesome! Go Ms. Sam! Really simple questions, asked rapidly keep pupils on their toes & they are enjoying the increased participation.
As you keep the routine up, you can weave those questions in more & more seamlessly & without the instructions. Kudos for sharing bravely 💪🏼

NEW: Every child is missing the equivalent of 45 days of education a year because of poor behaviour from some of the pupils in their class that makes effective teaching impossible, according to official figures. Out of every 30 minutes of lesson time, teachers estimate that seven…
If we want to make teaching a job mere mortals can do effectively, we must create the conditions for them to be successful. The starting line is taking student behavior issues seriously.
